Not convinced the public nature of negotiations had anything to do with her career flopping. I think it’s more that she is not that versatile as a presenter imo. People like Adrian Chiles seem to adapt more easily to different formats and can reinvent themselves quite easily. She was only really known for the One Show, and that doesn’t require you to be the most inspiring or talented presenter. The difference to other daytime presenters is they are either legends of the game (like Lorraine), people aspire to be them (like Holly), or they are just genuinely talented at what they do

A rather confusing breakdown if I may say so. Not entirely sure you can categorise Lorraine and Susanna in the same league as Christine and Holly. Neither of the latter are journalists nor have any such experience. Susanna and Lorraine are both journalists. I’m old enough to remember her presenting/anchoring the Lockerbie plane crash on TV-AM when she was a wee Bonnie lass. 

The idea that Holly is a legend I find simply laughable, sorry Natasha I mean no offence. 

BIG MOIRA may have lacked a journalism background but she spent long enough in a purely news environment to be able to anchor on her own. 

Adrian Chiles was lucky he got the sports gig off the back of Daybreak, Christine not so much and even today has barely appeared on tv since.

Just my thoughts though.

Think you need to re read my post as I didn’t say Holly was a legend, I said she was aspirational for many at home and that is a clear part of her success on television. Although she is not a journalist it doesn’t seem to have made much difference as she is one of the most popular presenters in the country. And I’m not sure where I supposedly mentioned Susanna. I don’t think it’s about being lucky either, Adrian had already done a lot of diverse radio and TV work pre Daybreak whereas Christine had not. He is not a journalist either. I don’t understand this argument that someone can’t be a versatile presenter because they don’t have a journalism degree.

I know I’ve mentioned how bonkers I think this is previously, but Richard and Ranvir sat socially distanced for the entire show yesterday, then proceeded to sit right next to each other for the final item!

Quite what makes the corner of the studio or the sofa area a Covid-safe zone in comparison to the desk I do not know.

I think the remaining social distancing is purely related to the size of the desk and not knowing what to do with it in ‘normal’ times rather than anything else.

Yes that will be the reason why - it's easy to sit next to each other on a sofa but to do it on the desk means rebuilding/rewiring the desk.

Christine is one of the main hosts of Loose Women (along with Charlene, Ksye and Ruth) and has been for the last few years. And she is also a regular stand-in host of Lorraine.

She is supposedly a main host but makes very sporadic appearances in contrast to Ruth Charlene and Kaye and even Jane

Just a guess, but I've never seen a news studio desk without computers and monitors in them. They're never just a bit of perspex and wood, there's always stuff in them

Just to say, Adrian Chiles absolutely is a journalist - he has a degree in it, his first job was as a sub-editor in newspapers and he presented Working Lunch for over a decade. But I certainly do agree with the general point that you make.

Apologies for taking this off topic, but I think it worth bearing in mind that presenters (like other professions) work as much as they want/need too. Christine got married since leaving Daybreak and latterly had children, I imagine she probably is in position where she works as enough as she needs to whilst also working around family duties. 

That’s not to say her and Adrian weren’t slightly tarnished by Daybreak - they were and it certainly wasn’t the ‘big break’ that ITV might have sold it as. But I think both ultimately still formed career paths today that many, including themselves, would be happy with.

Maybe, but the fact that she appears on Lorraine every day during the school holidays suggests that is not really the case for her. She rarely appears on Loose Women in contrast, which is why I commented on it. Anyway, this is not the Daybreak thread so I think we better get back on topic.

Adil Ray is off until August now and Richard Madeley is potentially off on his summer break, so it’ll be interesting to see who is actually left to present it when Susanna goes off too. Think we’ll end up with a lot of Ben and Kate for the next couple of months. Wonder if we’ll also get Kate/Charlotte/Ranvir presenting together again, I never really understood why they started insisting on having a male/female combination after 4-5 years of regularly having female presenters on together.

Why do you think they don’t want to, and why do they need to anyway? They already have 3 ‘deputies’ for Susanna.

They don't do it because they don't want anyone to be deemed better than Susanna. Kate is a fill in, and they can utilize Charlotte and Ranvir when needed, but there is nothing stopping them bringing in another female - but they don't.
