Launch New BBC Sport Graphics

Tbh I like the gradiented graphics that they've used for Wimbledon, especialy since its more tailored to the coverage, unlike a lot of graphics that the BBC create which are often shoehorned into a generic style that can be repeated very easily. I could see snooker having gradient graphics of the six colours (yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black, possibly even the red) at some point, but perhaps it would be too busy/rainbow like to do that.

I wonder how they'll do the player flags, if they'll even bother with that for the tournament.

i guess i'm one of the odd ones out who likes the new graphics - how little there is of them at the moment.

though i do think the blocks in the logo animate a bit fast...

I’m with you. I actually like the use of gradients. It’s a spillover on the BBC’s design language, and the gradients of the Wimbledon colors mixed with the sport-yellow is a nice touch, hinting at how expansive the actual sport design is. I am very much liking the expansiveness of the BBC’s new look; especially for sport.

I suppose Wimbledon was the only time that the new package could be introduced this year due to all the other major sporting events overlapping each other. Previously introductions have coincided with football events - the 2003 package debuted with the start of the Six Nations and Manchester United vs Arsenal in the FA Cup (15th Feb) and the 2017 package was introduced in August 2017 ahead of the start of the football season. The 2006, 2010 and, I think 2014, packages all coincided with the World Cup.

Yes, and before that, the 2001 package got a sneak preview in June 2001 when they showed Greece vs England live. That was quite a high profile broadcast for BBC Sport, as it was a week after the last Premier League Match of the Day before they lost the rights, so they used this match as a signifier that they were still serious about football and a major player, and the start of a new era of live matches, even though it was the last match of the season. So they launched the new titles and graphics on that match, and then everything else, including Wimbledon and all the other summer sport, used the old set until they were officially launched at the start of the new football season in August.

I quite like what I've seen of the new graphics, if only because, while the previous graphics have all been very stylish, they can sometimes be a bit distracting in how they appear on screen, spin around, get the BBC Sport logo popping out of them and so on, and then disappear again. It might be better to have a slightly simpler set that makes the information contained within them a bit more immediately obvious and a bit less distracting in how they appear.

Interesting, I was under the impression that the 2003 set were the first time they had introduced a standardised graphics style across all of BBC Sport, but clearly standardised packages are much older than I thought - though that does make sense given multi-sport programmes like Grandstand. The problem with Sports graphics is that they don't get the same coverage in terms of caps as News graphics do on presentation websites.

Well, in those days it was less a full package but a standardised font and animation and so on. You can see it in action here throughout this coverage of the Grand National.

That was the period where the BBC Sport set had an upstairs with a desk, where they'd do Final Score and MOTD, and downstairs with a sofa where they'd do Football Focus and Grandstand. It was quite a radical revamp at the time, that was when Football Focus and Final Score span off into separate programmes and Final Score went from being one man reading the scores off the teleprinter to the Soccer Saturday-style format with pundits, and so on.

Before that I remember them changing from the italic font they used throughout the nineties into the non-italic font on Grand National Day in April 1999, which again was applied across BBC Sport, though MOTD still used the old graphics until the end of the season.

Looks quite nice. Obviously is smaller than the old one and doesn't say what channel the matches are on, but apart from the nicer is less of an eyesore.

Just looks like a fault though and that it should stretch at least to that purple line.

Re: previous graphics. When was it they had those really plain blue and transparent graphics?

The BBC Sport logo isn’t centre aligned properly.

Bit of a very minor grumble, but it appears the channel logos often appear only in black. Would be better if they were in their own colours to stand out more (or with a background like they were on the old graphics but it appears boxed logos are to be a thing of the past bar Twitter profile pictures).

That’s the thing about BBC Sport: the channel names will only appear in black, unless there is black behind it in which case, there is color.

The boxed iPlayer logo they use looks awful. Set it free!

Also think now when they're cross promotion a channel and iPlayer the fact the channels don't have their own icon really stands out.
