Launch New BBC Sport Graphics
#16
The yellow-green- purple blur is that just for Wimbledon or the new look for BBC sport? Also, the BBC blocks look really grainy and aren’t as clear as the old blocks? Think they need to be a bit bigger?

Would be prepared to bet upwards of three pounds that the inclusion of green and purple in the gradient is specific to coverage of Wimbledon.
"Good evening. Dull, grey, cold, miserable - and that's just me. The weather hasn't been great, either."

I’d imagine they would change these then for sport specific events? Eg white and red for England v wales rugby.

So far I am quite liking it, they are maybe a little big but stuff like that becomes natural over time. I think I'll save my ultimate judgement for when the graphics themselves are used for the coverage itself, we may possibly see that tonight with the cricket highlights or have to wait for some football coverage.

As with the previous set of graphics, the green and purple is just for Wimbledon, in the same way the yellow was replaced with teal and dark blue for the Summer and Winter Olympics respectively and red for the last World Cup.

When Wimbledon comes around the BBC set up 5 additional pop-up Red Button channels and a HD version of the main Red Button (1) for the linear audience

That's quite nice other than the logos.   The full screen ones aren't too bad but the astons seem really oversized for a brand that has been quite minimalist for the last 20 years.

P.S. Surely they could use version of that for the rou d the courts recap David posted earlier.

The strawberries flying about at the end of the titles are a slight bit cheesy for my liking, but the graphics are fine.

I quite like the name captions and the look at the court with the simple gradient, I’m assuming that the green and purple are bespoke to Wimbledon, but it’s a nice way to change the graphics without replacing the yellow. I’m not a fan of the scoreboards/bars as they don’t feel like they fit in to the new package.

I suppose Wimbledon was the only time that the new package could be introduced this year due to all the other major sporting events overlapping each other. Previously introductions have coincided with football events - the 2003 package debuted with the start of the Six Nations and Manchester United vs Arsenal in the FA Cup (15th Feb) and the 2017 package was introduced in August 2017 ahead of the start of the football season. The 2006, 2010 and, I think 2014, packages all coincided with the World Cup.

I like those graphics. I'm thinking of recreating them, but with the gradient from the end boards, plus a few modifications to match other sports, like what the BBC did with Wimbledon

The match graphics are Wimbledon host broadcaster graphics, just like you get with Champions League (for example) so they won't particularly match (although clearly they were based on the BBC Sport graphics of the time!)

Bit of a very minor grumble, but it appears the channel logos often appear only in black. Would be better if they were in their own colours to stand out more (or with a background like they were on the old graphics but it appears boxed logos are to be a thing of the past bar Twitter profile pictures).

This graphics remind me a bit of those Apple Baseball graphics launched not long ago.

On the whole I think they suit something like Wimbledon, but might look a bit odd on Match of the Day, so it’ll be interesting to see how they’re adapted.

Wimbledon's graphics have been based on BBC templates for a while, but often not in-sync after switches in graphics. I seem to recall that after the last two new BBC Sport packages were introduced, Wimbledon were a year or two behind in adopting them.

They've now switched to their own template, the last BBC style score graphics were in 2017, the current set was adopted in 2018.

The BBC were the host broadcaster up until very recently so the graphics were always aligned, even if not adopted immediately.   However since 2018 Wimbledon Broadcast Services have been set up to be the host broadcaster of the tournament, so the graphics evolved from what they had from the BBC but are now independent of them.    We'll probably have to wait until Queens next year for the in match version of these for tennis.

One thing to note with the graphics is how the new snooker ones introduced last year weren't really a hint of what to expect.   Of course this being the BBC it'll probably be another year before all the sports catch up.
