Dan Walker joins 5 News
Dan gets a trip out to 10 Downing Street rather than the 5 News Studio for his debut!

Amusingly he is carrying the 5 News mobile phone too and has had to write the number on his hand just in case he forgets it! Big Grin

5 News love their gimmicks. Here's an opportunity to start afresh after the awful revamp and then give their new signing the phone!
From the bits I've seen, Dan has fitted in nicely to 5 News although I agree they need to drop the 5Phone, it doesn't work as a gimmick.
I quite like the 5 Phone, it feels like a different way of doing a mainstream news bulletin outside of breakfast, but I can see why others don’t.

Dan was really good today and I suspect he and Claudia Liza will become a great pairing

Of course he’s just a guest!
However, it wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine him taking over GMB in a couple of years time, with an Adrian Chiles-style deal to present sport. And not hard to imagine him getting bored at C5 News quite quickly. It’s well made but will never give him the platform he enjoyed on BBC One. Also his pet projects may well tank (a lot of these golden handcuff deals never quite work when they’re not “entertainers”).

An Adrian Chiles-style deal to present sport (as well as a news programme) is not going to happen down the line.  Especially if we're talking certain live major sporting events.
He definitely breathed a lot of life into it. The problem now will be when he’s away (filming all these other C5 shows he’s been promised) given some of the rather dull all-female presenting duos this programme seems to like.
Probably not really the best day to judge it given they had a big story dominating but he should be a good fit - although the underlying issues such as the 5 phone need resolving. I think the classic 5 News format in the newsroom would really suit Dan.

Guess we'll get ratings info today so certainly sections of the media can gloat he beat Piers at least 10 to 1. Heck, probably more like 25 to 1.

Finally caught some of "5 News at 5 with Dan Walker" as it's now on the EPG and this shot isn't the greatest.

And a nod to 5 News's past in this one.

Good to see him not wearing a tie!
Dan presented solo from Chelmsford on Friday afternoon and the whole flow of the bulletin felt a lot better than having a co-presenter, even with the 5 Phone.
Buttoned up double breasted suit with pocket square but no tie is quite the look
As often happens with these huge money signings, it has had zero impact on the ratings

I don’t think they were probably expecting a major ratings boost initially tbh. It’s about having another Vine type name to add to the Channel 5 stable and strengthen the overall schedule. I’m sure they are hoping for long term growth but he’s only a few weeks in at this point.
He's still doing better than Piers Morgan!

It's an unfair article because 5 News is never going to have the same reach as BBC Breakfast, it's on at a much more competitive slot and TBH the value of Dan to Channel 5 is having in other parts of the schedules.
I don't really get who 5 News is supposed to appeal too now. When it started it had an obvious target audience but it's point of difference has gone now and it feels like a bulletin on a budget hosted by BBC cast offs.
