The morning ministerial media round

Somewhat ironic to have a Tory Political Broadcast tonight saying how well it's all going. I thought non-election PPBs had been scrapped though?

Quite the contrary, PPBs should not be broadcast during election or referendum periods! Party Election Broadcasts on the other hand...

Labour / Scottish Labour have their PPB next Wednesday at the same time as today's Conservative / Scottish Conservative one.

I think it's a sign of how much cut through this story has. I know they've got an interview with Nadhim Zahawi tonight.

This Morning also showed the opening statement and first couple of Keir Starmer questions of PMQs.

Apparently, it was supposed to be Grant Shapps doing the media round this morning. However, he backed out when Johnson refused to give him more details about the party.

There was plenty that could have been talked about with him regarding the suspension of the Smart Motorway roll out, and failing that the energy price crisis (which is slowly brewing to become a huge catastrophe for us all)

The purpose of these interviews though is for the politicians to answer the questions put to them by the journalists - not for the journalists to ask the questions on the matters the politicians want to discuss.

I don't think Shapps would have wanted to discuss either issue, any more than the May 2020 party! We do however need a bit more scrutiny of present and near future events

To be fair they've all been doing it lately and therefore it is quite noteable that for the first time in a while it's seemingly only GMB being snubbed.

It'll be interesting to see if any ministers are available tomorrow. Given that Sue Gray’s report is apparently still undergoing checks it looks unlikely that there will be any statement from the PM in the House of Commons tonight. In which event if the statement in the HoC is delayed until the following day I wonder if any minister will want to appear before any statement from the PM has been read out, especially if the report is released later this evening/tonight.

The ministerial interview today for BBC Breakfast was supposed to have been Oliver Dowden, until he resigned just before 6am. Then at 7am they had been told it would be the deputy PM Dominic Raab, however it looks like Raab/Conservatives/government changed their mind and that didn't happen.

Did they manage to find a minister willing to do the daily interviews? I'm assuming the GMB and Sky News were also minister-less.

Nobody on Sky News at the normal time - 7:05. Eventually, just before the 9am news, business minister Paul Scully did it.

I assume they were desperately waking up ministers to do the daily interviews, and by the time they were able to do them had to split responsibilities.

Raab did all the outlets on Wednesday - there wasn't one yesterday due to the by-elections - so that is twice in a row he has done Radio 4.
