BBC News: April 2022 onwards

It's strange that BBC News would be on air in this strand, but you do get bulletins like the Spanish Telediario and the Dutch NOS Journaal.

Looks like it's part of their schedule and has been for some time.

I used a VPN and watched for myself. Doesn't usually air with the One idents.
I couldn't find any other thread in which to post this . . . but yesterday during PMQs the BBC accidentally cut to a live shot at Millbank.

I'm sure JoCo wasn't asleep, just staring at her phone/script. At least we now know that the studio is somewhat deserted at the time.  Tongue

They have just launched a channel too dedicated to airing news bulletins from around the world.

Could this be a 'proper' reason why any revamping or rebranding is being waited on until next year? To kind of make sure all concerned are singing from the same design or technical hymn sheet - to use the certain vernacular.

Just that given from what has been alluded to is the Nations getting upgrades this year and the Regions in a phased approach probably next year. I may be spitballing here but does this seem a decent way of looking at why the new look won't be introduced until everything is in place. Certainly if one is looking at it from a BBC One perspective.

I doubt it because the regions will likely have their sets updated over a period of months, if not years - it's not something that usually is done in all regions at once.   Therefore there will never be a set date where everything is ready - and if your waiting two years for the last regional set to be done to rebrand the national news that is very much a waste of time.

Fundamentally, of course, there is no particular barrier to having all regions introduce new sets at once. If you're doing it anyway, it doesn't actually cost more to do it all at the same time and what one region is doing doesn't affect what another one is doing. It would, though, be a massive logistical nightmare - if, for instance, one of the sixteen regions falls behind schedule, do you delay the launch in all regions or just that one? Plus the work will vary hugely between regions - some sets will be larger and some studios will use the opportunity for technical upgrades. Plus you have to create satisfactory temporary set-ups for all the regions.

The closest the BBC has ever come to doing an all in one day set change were the September 2002 set refreshes - when all the English regions (bar London and South East) had their 1999/2000 sets repainted, refurbed, etc. to coincide with the new red and gold titles. The 1999/2000 rollout itself is the only time the BBC has actually installed new sets of a similar style in every region - that rollout took eight months from the first sets (nations, SE) to the last two (East Mids, Look East).

Since then, it's been more ad hoc and less consistent. A few regions got 2003-style 'light-up' desks, but only really Wales ever got a full 2003-style set. The Barco-style rollout took quite a while. Just talking about the 'true', standarised Barco-style sets, the first was Humberside (March 2009) and the last was Oxford (April 2014 (though Yorkshire's 2018 set arguably counts)). Even then there are five regions that never got one. Then you have the NBH-style rollout that never really got anywhere. Other than the nations and London, only the two Midlands regions, the South East and South West ever got sets that could qualify as NBH-style and only Spotlight's was a full, proper job.

Given both the past and the general state of the Reith rollout, I would be amazed if they did install new sets for every region on the same day.

I doubt though they have sixteen different teams available to construct all the sets at the same time. I’d always presumed there was one team who would install the sets on a region by region basis.

See this is what I wasn't sure about. If they use one or a few teams to install the sets, then it would be impossible. But I seem to recall a discussion about the variable build quality in some regional sets as being explained by them using local contractors. I might be remembering that wrong, but if they do local teams it would be technically possible (though, as I say, still a logistical nightmare). Also I suspect that most of the set components are actually constructed off-site by a single team and are then merely assembled in studio.
I assume it goes out to tender on a national level rather than regional and yes, I assume it would be more cost effective to have one company responsible for all the upgrades and hence teams responsible for multiple regions rather than each region responsible for their own. Even if not done on a national level you'd expect all the Look North's for example to be handle by the same team.

I've noticed today that both Sky and ITV have started using the correct spelling of Zelenskyy (with 2 Ys at the end).

Have BBC News done the same, or am I just very slow on noticing this across all channels some time ago?

Well his official Instagram profile spells it with just one y!
Seems like Simon McCoy was more of a rebel at BBC News 24 than we realised!

Am I missing something obvious, but why is the BBC 10pm news not always available on iplayer, either as a 'play from start' item, or a freestanding item after 10:30 ?

It's kind of the 'last train home' proper chance of a news bulletin, so I often use iplayer to watch it, if I've been watching something else beyond 10pm

Tried it last night, no luck. Thursday night, was fine
Has anyone noticed the new trundle cam shots? There've been quite a few this week that have caught my eye.

Check the closing shot of the Saturday lunchtime news, when it appears on iplayer.

Said shot is below:

I think i've seen the shot before but I could be wrong considering I don't really watch The News Channel that often unless its a big event.
The new forum for TV discussion, TV Talk Forum

I'm not sure whether it usually pulls as wide at the end, but a shot like that has definitely been used for a while to close weekend bulletins.

I think you hit the nail on the head. It does pull as far as it can go, or so it appears. Makes a grand old shot of the main Newsroom floor.
