Would this look better for the second tower screen...?

Looks much better - especially now I've noticed the 16:9 shot doesn't line up with the wall graphics at the bottom.

I was always a fan of the 1988-1993 newsroom studio and it does look like a little homage to that look. That 1988-1993 set was actually fairly flimsy in its make up, and when you saw it for real, it looked very different to how it came across on screen.

The use of Electric Friends robotics is interesting. I am curious if they were tired of the Furios or didn’t think they would look good in the set (the Furios can have recessed tracking). I assume the same cameras are used given the prompter hood and program monitor sticking out. The robotic were designed for brick/box cameras with a screen above and below.

What I would have done although health and safety may have a fit would be using tracked overhead cameras like Sky or the new Furios. Then you would have a nice clean studio.

No, it’s not the same cameras. The Electric Friends system only supports box cameras and the Furios in Studio E had full system cameras; the problem with the tower.W2 in its default configuration is that the prompt is not in line with the lens, leading to some poor eyelines. Having the vanity monitors at the bottom of the column also doesn’t work well for situations where you need it close to the eyeline. I suspect the BBC insisted on having a more normal setup to overcome these issues.

I agree that a slung camera setup would possibly look better and other than truss loading (which I can’t see being a huge problem) there shouldn’t be any health and safety concerns.

I do find these cameras very ugly and somewhat menacing when they surround the presenter. Those in E are much easier on the eye.

Funny how back then they were basically spinning the same spiel:

Back to a bit more static already with huw almost exclusively at the desk.

Is there any reason why they are quite so tall? Is it so they can move the camera up higher? It’s obvious they would need to be taller than those in E as E has the rail higher up, which wouldn’t work when the rail is in the floor

Minor wobble on the screen at the end when the camera was pulling in and out of Mark Urban in the Newsnight studio.

This is fast becoming required viewing, it's great fun. Loved Huw saying Newsnight would begin "once the cameras are sorted out" and, of course, the liberal use of his patented catchphrase, "my colleague".

It hasn't been this entertaining since the golden days of Michael Buerk's nod in the general direction of BBC2 when he plugged Newsnight!

Couldn’t agree more about the touchscreen. It’s more of a distraction for me, especially when it serves no purpose other than to bring up the next image PowerPoint-style.

The touch screen will prove useful eventually, when it actually has a necessary use. Elections data etc. For now, I kind of think it’s a bit “it’s there so we will use it”.
Overall, think the new set is amazing. Love the regional ending. Would be great if all the regional studios could have the same look but would be near impossible due to the inconsistency of studio size across the regions. I think it also does show how the licence fee is used locally but shown nationally.
