As we know, TV-am was 'unplugged' at 9.25 am each day, so what would have happened for the special broadcast at 10.05.?
Would the scheduled programme between 9.25-10.05 been fed up from Thames and received into Hawley Crescent as an o/s, or would TV-am, as per usual, having been detatched from the national TX chain at 9.25, meant that it was Thames that put them to air for the network as their o/s?
Almost certainly the latter, if only for contractual and licensing reasons. TV-am was not a 'broadcaster' after 09:25, the ITV regional companies took over. Leaving TV-am in circuit (and therefore invoving BT on a large scale at very short notice) would have been full of technical risks. Far better to feed TV-am into Thames or ITN as an OS.
Of course Thames would do pretty much the same thing again a couple of years later (the other side of 9:25am) when TV-am had a power failure due to the Great Storm of October 1987, and hotfooted it up to Thames to be able to get on the air at all. IIRC any output that did come from Camden Lock was piped through Thames as an outside broadcast and it was technically Thames who were on air that morning as Camden Lock didn't have any power to get going (and as it turned out they were only up for an hour or so and then no output at all at some point after 8am).
Sometimes, news flashes aren't about horrible news and are even "scripted". This is an example from my home country, the Netherlands. Our royal traditions are somewhat different, it is tradition monarchs abdicate in favour of her/his eldest child.
On a January day, just before the Queen's actual birthday in 2013, the news broke that HM The Queen would give a televised address in the evening. Speculations already suggest it would have to do with her abdication.
The news broke during a regular news bulletin on tv,

(the news comes in at about 4:45).
A special broadcast showed Her Majesty's address, the national anthem and an address by the Prime Minister. Afterwards, NOS already had the correct titles ready, as if they knew it was happening https://youtu.be/U5E0oltUGH8

Back in 2003 BBC1 simulcast open ended coverage from News 24 of the Verdict in the Soham Murders. It’s hard to imagine coverage like that anymore.

tying up two loose ends - the tech-ops reminisces on the previous page posted by telebox2001 mentions the 9 O'Clock News being late due to all the news reports they'd shown earlier - and as you can see from the clip above, they got to it at 21:00:30.

They did well to pull that back, presumably by dropping trails left right and centre. As Pauline mentions, News demanded to come on a clockstart but couldn't because their last flash had started PoV late.

I never cease to be amazed at watching the 'fish fingers' title sequence. It was remarkable for its time, and it was many years before I realised how they'd done the subtle change between studio and the other background in the CGI titles.

I still love it, Stuart. I preferred the 89-93 titles personally but the 85-89 computer graphics seemed space age to me at the time, particularly the way the laser beams shoot out from London to form the logo.
The music is proper old-skool "sit up and pay attention" too which I also lurve.

In that clip above, you can see (in the wide shot) Martyn Lewis and Andrew Harvey frantically gathering details before they go on air. At the closed-in shot before we go to Martyn, you can see Kate Adie has crept into the desk at the extreme right of the shot. Only just visible.
Was the opening wide shot (with the VO of the presenters names) truly LIVE or slightly pre recorded?
I know the close-in wide shot is definitely LiVE.

These things can be last minute. There's an anecdote from Pauline on how she was on for Lockerbie. After the drama they were supposed to go to open ended news, but with no script ready news asked pres not to come to them - leaving them no option but to fire the scheduled programme.

It looks fairly straight forward to me, isn't it just a chromakey, that dissolves into black? The title sequence starts as a completely blue screen which the studio is keyed onto.. The blue changes to black before the 'fish fingers' reach the newsreaders heads..
Presumably they prerecorded that and the headlines, but notice on the Zeebrugge opening the programme logo moves to the bottom left and then disappears, presumably everything a bit last minute

Although her anecdotes in that article have been shown not to be infallible - the Thatcher resignation one doesn't tally with the clips that have surfaced in recent years.
Write that down in your copybook now

That entire show was once available on YouTube, and I’ve tried to find it to no avail.
Kate Adie joined post pre-recorded intro/titles and more or less acted as a third pres. I remember it well.

Indeed, but looking it up this does appear to be the case - the drama was interrupted but then they did go straight to the next programme.

Yes, now I understand how it was done. However, 37 years ago it looked like 'magic', and it was only ever seen for a matter of seconds. My youthful ignorance left me in awe at the time.
