The BIG Breakfast to return in August

An interesting move and probably the most we could expect.  So glad it's with AJ and Mo too - they really worked well together.

The Metro article says it's from "The Big Breakfast house" but no mention of that in the C4 press release:

Sadly I don't think the neighbours in the properties which have cropped up over the last couple of decades were that welcoming to the show.

I would be very surprised if it returned to Lock Keepers Cottage as it just doesn't seem practical to me.  I'd rather they broadcast from a location with more flexibility than a residential property would allow.

I do think we'll be seeing the return of Zig & Zag though as they seemed very supportive of the Black To Front edition and were even mentioned during the show.

I think if you take out the house, it risks starting to feel more like Sunday Brunch albeit with less cooking. Although whatever happens I’m sure they’ll try to keep the general look of the show with an outside space.

I can’t see them having normal news bulletins, but perhaps they’d do something similar to the One O’Clock on packed lunch instead in those slots.

The show will compliment Sunday Brunch by having an adult skewed entertainment show on Saturday mornings. Hopefully C4 will give it a longer commission after this summer period to see if C4's share rises against the cooking juggernauts.

A run through the Summer also means a production team is in place should C4 wish to do anything to mark the show's 30th in September. The house could be used during the week to pre-record an anniversary show.

Mo was on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show this morning and hinted it will run into September, not just August.

Nope it’s a luxury house now which they rented for the revival

The best I was hoping for was something for either the 30th anniversary of the show and 40th anniversary of the channel so hopefully one of those at least happens.

Kind of more intrigued this time by whether it might pave the way for a serious attempt at a Saturday Morning show.  Should brand it SM:BB.

This is a good sign for things to come. Saturday morning television has been pretty naff over the last few years. It will be nice to see something new, at least to me. Being a zoomer, I did not grow up with The Big Breakfast, in the sense that I didn't watch it with a long term memory bank of it (being a baby and all).

This is such welcome news. I'm a big fan of the original show, and the one-off revival last year perfectly captured the anarchy and excitement of the show in it's heyday(s) without feeling like a 90s throwback. A lot of that was down to AJ and Mo, but the design and vibe set by the crew and production were also on point. I also hope Judi Love is back "on the bed" as I thought she was brilliant in that role.

All in all I'm not surprised it's coming back for more, and in today's climate I think Saturday mornings are the perfect place for it. In fact, a once-a-week slot could guarantee it more longevity than a daily slot would as it's less likely to burn out presenters, strong features and big name guests as it would in a daily slot. You only need to look at how long Sunday Brunch has survived to see how much easier it is to maintain a weekly slot. However, on the flip side of the coin, the worry with a weekly slot is where it could base itself. For a 4 week stint, I'm sure they can book out the original house - or at least another house which would afford them the same kind of vibe. If it's extended beyond that (which I'm personally expecting will happen...) it just won't be practical to have it at any regular residential building. No one is going to open their doors to year-round disruption like that. So it would likely need to find a building which can realistically be booked out regularly, or a studio space which they can get into and out of on a weekly basis. That may well water down its individuality, so it's a tricky balance.

Above all though, even if they don't give it a permanent slot, reviving The BB as a "live" brand again gives Channel 4 a strong morning programme whenever they need it - whether that's for an anniversary special, something to fill the Summer mornings with, or even just a familiar brand that can be wheeled out during special events - a Jubilee special, a week of shows during the Paralympics, a week of Christmas shows etc.

Certainly feel with the summer slot it needs a location with outdoor space. If they can't get the house maybe taking it on the road is the best option.

Any idea what time it'll be airing - I've seen a report suggesting it'll be for two and a half hours, so I'm guessing it'll be something like 8.30-11am. The realy frustrating thing is you just know however brilliant it is it'll get thumped by Saturday Kitchen in the ratings I'm sure.


P.S. Just an aside but this announcement came on the 25th anniversary of the launch of The Bigger Breakfast. Indeed surprised they never looked at whether that could become a weekend fixture, although with the strength of Saturday morning TV at the time, and C4 still dedicating it to sport in the late 90s (it was quite a few years before T4 expanded to Saturdays IIRC) perhaps not a surprise it didn't. I wonder if it was ever in contention for the T4 Sunday slot (which launched late 1998), which essentially took the same format anyway, but was way cooler.

Channel 4 haven't shown kids shows for years, I doubt they're going to start again.
