BBC Four & CBBC to close

The Daily Mail like to have at least one 'BBC-bashing' clickbait article each day.  The same people comment every time about how they are 'chained to a seat and forced to watch and pay for the BBC against their will', conveniently ignoring that if they really wanted to avoid the TVL, they can use the plethora of free catch-up services.

But that doesn't fit with their agenda.
I think maybe BBC Three and Four should merge and maybe have a 5-2 split in terms of BBC three nights vs BBC four nights.
Jake Kanter, a usually reliable source, says BBC4 is likely to go online from 2027.  Obviously, a lot can happen in the interim.

Quote:The BBC is set to signal the end of BBC4 as a TV channel and announce up to 200 hours of content cuts as part of attempts to plug a £1.4 billion hole in its finances.

Tim Davie, the director-general, is due to address staff today, revealing a savings initiative that has been the source of speculation at the corporation.

Speculation is mounting before the address and three sources said they expected Davie to announce that BBC4 will be moved online after 2027, when the corporation’s existing royal charter ends.

Merging BBC Three and Four is an even more ridiculous suggestion than the merging of CBBC and Cbeebies that often gets suggested on here.
Looks like we’re in for a busy day of news, we are England is also being axed after the next series
When are the cuts going to be announced?

The internal announcement is at 2pm, I would imagine not long after that if these two things are related.

I would only say, I would not label any outcome as a "ridiculous suggestion"until we have heard what is to be said. It was always said closing BBC Four was "not on the cards" by certain members of this forum. It appears anything is possible when the money starts to dry up. And public perception is everything.

The thing is the core readership of the biggest press critics of the BBC are also the same group who watch BBC four and the least technically up to date group. I know multiple people living in households either without internet or with internet they only turn on for visitors.
Jim Waterson (Guardian) reporting that the Oxford and Cambridge opts are to go from TV News, alongside This is England being cancelled.
Also BBC One Oxford and Cambridge and their related regional news programmes are to end by the end of the year. Also seen suggestions of restructuring of Local Radio in England. Neither are particularly surprising moves. As I said elsewhere, it seems that, in terms of broadcast services, it appears that most of these cuts are going to be coming to the services that were launched in the 2000s. The end point seems to be a BBC Television and Radio portfolio more like that at the end of the 90s than recent times.

I can’t imagine an subscription (as that is how the bbc will likely be funded in 2027) BBC Four doing well online. For a start a proportion of its target audience won’t be able or willing to subscribe.

Through the whole idea of a subscription BBC is a technical minefield.

For additional clarification, We are England is the replacement for Inside Out (though with larger regions) and This is England is a film and later Channel 4 series by Shane Meadows about the 1980s (which I had just got confused with This Country, an accalimed BBC Three sitcom).
