Presumably the same feed used for both broadcasters nowadays but back in the 70s/80s did the BBC and ITV use the same match footage fir the FA Cup Final?

No, both did their own, but there was an agreement that each broadcaster would make their pictures to the other if they were having problems. That happened during an England vs Scotland match in the seventies, ITV lost pictures for a bit so they used the Beeb's, and the Beeb deliberately didn't put any graphics on screen while they were doing that.

In addition the camera up in the VIP stands (for the cup and medal presentations) was shared between BBC and ITV,  simply because it was impossible to have two cameras (of that era) there. I also gather both broadcasters shared some of the scaffold rigs too.

Yes, they went on until about 8.05, no Big Long List Of Credits or anything.

In addition the camera up in the VIP stands (for the cup and medal presentations) was shared between BBC and ITV,  simply because it was impossible to have two cameras (of that era) there. I also gather both broadcasters shared some of the scaffold rigs too.

I've probably mentioned this before, but the radio commentary box at the old Wembley had no view of the royal box so the commentators had to watch it on the telly. Alan Green mentioned in his book that after the 1993 League Cup Final, when Steve Morrow broke his arm in the celebrations, the presentations were delayed by so long that ITV decided to go to an ad break and play in the presentations as live after it. That meant when they actually happened, Alan Green was watching adverts and had to make the whole thing up, guessing when the trophy was lifted by the noise of the crowd.

John inverdale had to stop presenting rugby union on the BBC, because of a new rugby union association role he took up. It meant he had to stop presenting coverage of the sport, to avoid a conflict of interests.

Ha! I'm sure if the Beeb had asked ITV nicely they'd have plonked a monitor with clean feed truck output in the commentry box for them!

A rare outing for the British Touring Championships on ITV itself today. Have only known that to happen in recent years if there is a clash with other sport on ITV4, but their schedule is clear today.


And talking of sport on the main channel interesting to see over in the US they've now got a collegiate Rugby 7s tournament which is primarily on Peacock and CNBC but there is a two hour block (presumably live finals) on NBC too from 4-6pm.

It's part of a new broadcast arrangement where today and Oulton Park on 12 June get a showcase slot on ITV in addition to the main ITV 4 coverage.

Dare I say budget cuts partly due to the licence fee freeze may be a factor. I imagine that some of these long serving individuals may be a lot more expensive than employing newer equivalents.

Bumper day for BBC One yesterday with the Cup Final and Eurovision and BBC Sport will be very happy they managed to get the trophy presentation etc on BBC One before the programme moved to BBC Two at 8pm. Also ITV will be happy but as Steve Williams says ITV are not there for the final but for all the earlier exclusive matches

Re the BBC sports presenters retiring - I can't only talk about the two soccer presenters, but they were only ever on the BBC, whereas the trend these days for both commentators and experts is to have very few exclusive, most are freelance and can turn up on other stations. No doubt that makes them cheaper for the BBC (and for ITV, BT and Sky).

Probably more due to loss of rights due to cuts than salaries in the case of the rugby - even though John Inverdale was their main Six Nations presenter I suspect Gabby was preferred moving forward, especially as she's a regular across BBC Sport across the year on other things more so than John.

At the end of Channel 4's rugby highlights (still raking the viewers in at the fashionable time of 02:20 BTW) a sting came up proclaiming that Channel 4 was 'Sports Network of the Year'. Firstly I was surprised it had enough sports content to qualify for that accolade, but it did indeed win Sports Network of the Year at the British Sports Journalism Awards. Congratulations to Channel 4!
