Regardless of the actor playing the doctor, if the script is dreadful as it has been for some time, it matters little who is in the role.
I am hopeful with a return of Russell T Davies it will be good again!

Actually somewhat genius to announce it a few hours before he is walking the BAFTA red carpet and effectively piggy backing on anothers press event.

RTD cooked up something similar by getting David Tennant to announce his departure as part of his acceptance speech at the NTAs. In his book The Writer's Tale, it's explained that they had to go to a lot of hassle with the NTAs to allow Tennant to be able to accept by video link (as he was in Hamlet at the RSC at the time) and they had to pre record the announcement just in case the awards overran and they missed the Hamlet interval. He also had an interview with Richard and Judy earlier that day (that didn't go out until the day after) and had to pray they didn't ask about any rumours in case the crew or audience leaked it beforehand. Compared to all that, this has been a much simpler way of going about it. Russel's scripts didn't win him fans even back in the day. A lot of the grumpier wing of fandom that is more prevalent on social media now existed back in 2005 but weren't quite as mainstream. And Russel definitely paid attention to them and all they had to say, even mentioning the vitriol in The Writer's Tale and how it drove some of his staff writers to tears.

Speaking of Jodie Whittaker, I wonder what she has planned next? I assume as she's pregnant, she's on a bit of a hiatus but I'm hoping she does a play either this year or next as it's 10 years since she starred in Antigone at the National Theatre.
