In terms of Ncuti Gatwa, I must admit, I have never heard of him and don't recognise him from anything I've watched previously. Will reserve judgement on his performance when his episodes go out.

I think the best-known thing he's been in so far is Sex Education on Netflix.

That's a great choice for the role. He's also been in one of the biggest shows on Netflix, so hopefully they will have plenty of hype around the show with him.. alongside people being excited for RTD Era 2.

But what a strange way to announce it.. just out of the blue like that. He'd not even been rumoured - from what i'd seen - as everyone seemed stuck on Olly & Lydia from It's A Sin.

I’m intrigued. It’ll be interesting considering I haven’t seen any of the stuff that they’re in but that certainly doesn’t discount their acting skills as a lot of people seem pretty excited after this announcement. Nobody had heard of Tom Baker or Matt Smith before their stints as the Doctor either so we’ll have to see how this goes. As I said, I’m definitely intrigued though.

To be fair, even when a Doctor actor is relatively well-known, I don't think they're ever chosen for that over their ‘rightness’ for the role.

Maybe going for a relative unknown is a way of not giving any preconceptions to viewers in advance of what the new doctor might be like, can understand that thinking if that's what it is.

Definitely the lowest-key announcement since David Tennant in 2005. Makes me wonder if it was always intended this way, or if their hand was forced by something getting out?

I'm not sure I understand your take. Ncuti may be known for previous work, but he's hardly a Hollywood A-lister. He's a brilliant actor with all the charm and quirks which suit the role of The Doctor.

Bad Education reaches wide but it's still a British show (which shoots in Wales too by the way), so where does this concern about Doctor Who becoming a 'shiny Hollywood show' come from?

Must admit that Ncuti is a new name to me too.

However, I had never heard of Matt Smith before he became the Doctor and he was brilliant.

I think based on previous relatively unknowns signed to take on epic well-loved shows/dramas/game-shows, that kind of thing tends to work pretty well on the whole. Good luck to Ncuti - never heard of him - but he sounds pretty good & up for the role!!
