BBC News: April 2022 onwards

I’m not sure what the frustration is with so many members on this forum. The BBC is currently in the midst of a huge budget crunch so changes were always going to be modest. Rebranding an organisation like the BBC was also going to be long, slow and like turning a cargo ship around 180 degrees.

I half agree, and half disagree.

On the one hand, I think much of the frustration around here is that this week's change is *just* a change in a box in the bottom left corner of the screen. I think some members were expecting a bigger refresh of graphics and the like. There's been weeks of build-up/discussion here -- and now we have a dedicated thread (sorry Rob!) -- all for what is a minor tweak to some templates. With unrealistically high expectations comes a very realistic prospect of disappointment. 

On the other hand, I think there's a pretty legitimate point of criticism as to how the roll-out of the new logo is progressing. Yes, the new logo looks much the same as the old. Most people wouldn't know the difference between Reith, Gill Sans or Arial. But... either branding matters, or it doesn't. If it doesn't matter, then why design a new logo system at all? If it does matter, then this long, drawn-out transition risks weakening the overall brand: the BBC as a bit chaotic, a bit messy, a bit unprofessional. And when you're fighting for relevance in a world with many competitors (and where your funding is determined by politicians), that's not a great look.

Red box logo was appeared in the beginning and BBC Breakfast logo becomes more linear, similar to BBC Radio logo.


There's bit mishmash of BBC World News America opening. First part of the opening used the new BBC logo, but the second part used the 1997 BBC logo with new BBC News logo at the bottom left. Giving that this programme also aired by many PBS stations, i think it's the first time PBS audience saw the new BBC logo.

They’ll come under the BBC Mugs department which aren’t due to begin their rollout of the new logo until mid October. There’ll initially be a transition period with the new blocks appearing on the existing style of mugs before a full rebrand in 2023 when the mugs will be replaced with reusable travel cups. These will all have a specific three-block icon depending on whether it’s to be used for tea, coffee or oxtail soup.

Yeah, when it comes to the BBC, the graphic design is good, but the implementation needs a little work. But it is nice we are seeing more and more of it come forth as the weeks go by. I also think that the design for the news division will "be like 1999" and rebrand fully, instead of just a small design change, as in 1997.

So I think most agree the boxed BBC NEWS doesn't work...



But that the BBC WORLD NEWS one looks better - probably because it's on two lines...



So it got me wondering what it would look like if the News Channel was still called News 24...



Maybe just '24' is too short, so perhaps they could have called it...

I think they should not need to wait until next year to see new countdown design. The Beeb can implement some sort of Chameleon-like branding for countdown similar to BBC Alba countdown, where BBC logo on top and "NEWS" or "WORLD NEWS" at bottom, except Reith Sans can be replaced by Reith Serif for numeral. They can take some example from PATV Schuntrope's video.

But it does fill the box when it’s text on two lines under the blocks.

The countdown looks terrible centre screen like that. Obscures the picture.

I like the idea, but yes the countdown covers too much of the screen. Maybe something like the numbers are less bold and flash bigger every 10 seconds then go smaller again. And then maybe an animation from the split bbc news into the red box would be good if they are sticking with the boxed logo.

Do we even need a countdown what it’s purpose id redesign it get rid of all the presenters and stuff and take it back to the simplicity of the 2000s but in chameleon style.

Use the three blocks to cleverly count down the seconds or something like that.

Not sure if anyone’s mentioned this yet but the BBC News YouTube channel is still using the old logo.
