They have used the newsroom as a studio before but I think they only have one gallery these days.

They have a fairly nice newsroom along with a video wall in the newsroom, that they’ve used on various occasions before.

Like others have said, pan-regional with a pre recorded end bit, or entirely pre recorded might be the way forward. I was surprised they still did a split lunchtime bulletin.

It’s a shame Mary isn’t much of a tweeter, as she’d be no doubt updating us about her train up to Leeds

I think the end of the London bulletin is pre-recorded in normal circumstances. Using the newsroom is fine but I would suspect they wheel the studio cameras in for that, and it probably takes a bit of rigging - particularly for lighting - rather than being ready to go at short notice.

Studio TC2 and TC3 at Television Centre are sublet by ITV to use for their daytime shows. Also, considering GMB and This Morning are permanent sets, they might have felt those style of sets was not suitable for their national news programming.

They also understand that Channel 4 is coming from their Leeds base, whilst Channel 5 is coming from a studio at the Paramount (formerly ViacomCBS) headquarters in Camden

The Paramount headquarters in Camden is the former Breakfast Television Centre isn't it?

The original Breakfast Television Centre studio block which housed Studio A and B for TV-am was demolished in around 2012-2013. It is now a new complex on the site. So they will not be using those studios, as they are now long gone.

Up until a few years ago Leeds had two live programmes with dedicated studios and galleries going out simultaneously. An acquaintance used to work there and said that if something happened in a neighbouring region that rendered their studio out of action disaster recovery protocols were a Pan region bulletin for Yorkshire with the other studio being used by the region without a working studio.

I know a lot has changed since then but it is possible Leeds May have a second set with its own gallery for such a situation where another region needs to rock up to Leeds because they can’t broadcast from their own studios.

I’d say the GMB studio would be of a more appropriate scale for the national news. Also I’d definitely be excited to see the ‘ITV News Gallery backdrop’ on the big wall and the studio lit in the ITV News colour palette. The side screen array being used for corespondent two-ways would work well too, and a there’s a ready made Weather area of course. They’d obviously need to avoid showing the GMB logo on the desk.

From a pres geek POV, it would definitely get the pulses racing.

I doubt the nature of the set would be the reason, there's a lot of other factors. Besides the GMB set has a desk and a big screen behind it so I don't see it would be an issue. It has editing facilities too.

However...

Presumably Leeds was chosen as its not in London and its in the same building as ITV playout. If there was a bigger issue that affected the whole of London then having a plan to decamp to White City wouldn't be suitable. Leeds can effectively stand in for Grays Inn Road and ITV Playout in Chiswick
