The new new NEW Central West and BBC Midlands Thread

Seems as if there’s been another return to single headed presentation on ITV News Central this week.

However it doesn’t seem to be for illness or self isolation reasons this time around as both Sam and Bob were on duty for the evening and late bulletins respectively yesterday and look to have swapped around today.

I wonder when Matt Teale will be departing Central. Has it actually been mentioned on air that is will be off soon?

Confirmed to be Matt Teale’’s final ITV News Central tomorrow (Fri 21st Jan),

He’s already headed down to meet Sangeeta at ITV Meridian yesterday.

Is that Henley-on-Thames (as per the studio backdrop), or a similar-looking bridge/river vista somewhere else?

Yes it’s Henley-on-Thames. Just outside of the Meridian region (It’s officially ITV London) even though it features on the backdrop on all 3 of Meridian’s sub-opts.

Meanwhile it was a nice farewell package for Matt’s last programme tonight with messages from Bob and Sameena and a few mentions that he’s going down to replace Fred on Meridian.

I think it is Henley. Arguably a quicker journey from Birmingham than Fareham (perhaps a future Top Gear Challenge) and of course inside the ITV London region, but hey...

Henley is one of those oddities where it's in the ITV London region purely because it's easier to get a signal from Crystal Palace than Hannington or Oxford. It's also covered by relays of Heart Thames Valley (ex 2-Ten/210) and Radio Berkshire rather than Radio Oxford.

Despite this BBC South Today Oxford have stories from Henley on their bulletins. I wouldn't be surprised if it's mapped on Sky/Freesat as BBC One Oxford on 101 and ITV London on 103.

Henley has been served by a TV relay since the mid 70s, that rebroadcasts Crystal Palace, so therefore BBC and ITV London. As you point out the same mast also carries BBC Radio and Heart Berkshire
Politics Midlands has reverted to the Midlands Today layout for the sofa again, but I think it's due to having the political guests back on Zoom from home rather than in the studio due to Covid fears.

Just to briefly come back to Henley. Sky and Freesat are indeed mapped to BBC One Oxford and ITV London in Henley. There are other parts of the Thames Valley which are mapped to BBC One South and ITV London. Presumably these are East Berkshire towns like Maidenhead?

I've just looked up Henley's UHF allocations, 41,44,47, exactly the same as Oxford's PSBs. If only Henley was fibre fed, it could be in an SFN with Oxford, and carry BBC Oxford (and Meridian Thames Valley) Never gonna happen though.
Midlands / East Midlands breakfast opts combined today and tomorrow.

Covid-19 related staffing issues apparently.

Ugh.

Whilst "shelves" isn't quite as extreme as "CANCELS" - which is what the likes of the Daily (Sieg) Heil and the Di-ly Obsess would've said - it still kind-of sounds to me like it's implying a permanent axing.
