News Coverage War in Ukraine
#1
Considering we could be on the verge of a massive crisis and big event in Ukraine within days, I thought I would create a thread for presentation matters of this coverage. From what I have seen, Sky News has sent Anna Botting out to Kiev, CNN have sent Jim Sciutto as well and probably wouldn't be surprised if they send another domestic presenter out there as well. Mark Urban is presenting Newsnight from there as well.

Matt Frei is also in Kiev for Channel 4 News.

Has anyone noticed that the broadcasters are using the Ukrainian (transliterated) spelling "Kyiv" rather than the Russian spelling "Kiev".

There was commentary on this in The Times a couple of weeks ago, as they have changed in the past few weeks.

Included was:

Quote:The view we’ve maintained until now is that Kiev belonged in the same category of anglicised foreign place names as Munich or Milan. This, however, is not how Ukrainians see it. To them Kiev is the Russian name for their city and its use by foreign media endorses Russia’s threat to their country.

This is not a whim, and we’re not living in the days of Churchillian bombast. We accept the force of their argument and that it is time for a change.

There has been a move towards that in recent years anyway.

CNN International have now sent Michael Holmes to Kyiv. It'll be interesting if he's utilised by Domestic once it kicks into daytime Eastern.

Tony Connelly is in Ukraine for RTÉ News.

I guess when Huw is sent out there is the time to get really worried.

Sky News cancelling the Friday 9pm transmission of Hotspots with a view to taking the Biden speech regarding Ukraine… which still hasn’t happened yet as of 21:47. Another clash with News at Ten on the cards?
