Plans for BBC One HD

The fact that article's title ends with a '?', the lack of any sources and the final line "BBC has been approached for comment" makes me strongly suspect the article has been based primarily on this post, rather than any new independent source.

I would have thought that if this date is confirmed we would have heard something from the BBC by now.

All of the HD regions have disappeared from the BBC schedules page, as quickly as they arrived. Maybe the whole thing was just a mistake? The wrong button clicked? Sad

More likely that they were preparing it and someone accidentally made it public earlier than planned. We already know the regions are going HD at some point, so it makes sense we'll see small updates before it happens.

It does seem odd to use all that extra DSat transponder space just to make a few local news programmes appear in HD. The rest of the schedule for BBC One is already in HD.

I thought the BBC were scratching about for money and pleading poverty. :?

That's pretty much what I was alluding to. It's feeling increasingly like this went live in error, rather than being a hint at something imminent. For now. Smile

Is the plan that on satellite the SD simulcasts will continue or will they flip the situation and reduce to one SD channel in England?

This is 100% what should be done.

My guess is if the BBC drop all the SD regions in England bar one on satellite, it'll probably be London that is kept or they could turn it into what BBC One HD is now with the red screen during regional programming.

It’s not really about that. It’s about making sure people see their regional news in any format. I’m certainly someone too lazy to flick to the SD channel on the rare occasion I’m watching live TV. I think lots of people do switch to SD and then don’t flick back. It’s messy to have this situation, and it needs resolving in some way at some point. It’s not about seeing Sally Taylor in full resolution.

In my case, I now rarely watch BBC regional news in real time because of the HD/SD situation, this would ensure that instead of turning to something else at 6.30 that I'd stay watching LCN 101 on Freeview after the Six instead of going to a VOD platform instead.

Anything that also helps viewers to stay watching BBC One HD instead of then watching prime-time output in SD because of the regional news issue is welcome.

It's the rare but still occassional non-news programming that suffers as well, especially for those who watch HD as a default and just check the EPG.

I've done it myself where I see something listed in the TV mag then go to record it and see it isn't down, so assume it's been dropped for some reason completely forgetting I need to check the SD channel instead.

Long term the SD versions will go, at least from Sky who are wanting to remove SD channels from their platform totally

Surely Two NI in HD had got to be a higher priority than Channel Islands getting One in HD.
You could argue that, in terms of population, several English regions should have had priority over BBC 1 NI HD yet this launched before any of the other nations and regions to coincide with the digital switchover there. At least BBC 2 NI HD does exist on Freeview (and presumably Virgin) whereas BBC English regions don’t currently exist in HD.
