Plans for BBC One HD

Finally we'll be able to get local news/programming in HD on BBC One in England.

The long-anticipated HD versions of BBC One's English regions look set to launch as soon as next month.

Earlier this year the corporation outlined plans to turn its flagship TV channel HD in England by the end of 2022 as part of an increased commitment to serve the regions.

Up until now BBC One has only been available in SD quality across its 12 regional variants, plus three sub-regional variants, in England, although a generic HD version of BBC One has been available, complete with an infamous holding screen whenever regional programmes are broadcast.

The 15 English versions of BBC One now look set to follow suit on Thursday, October 21 - almost a year earlier than originally planned.

I'd like to see more evidence first before assuming MediaMole is correct, such as the BBC acquiring space on Astra for all the new regional variants or axing SD versions to make room as ITV have done.

I'm hoping BBC Two NI HD will be launched at the same time on satellite.
Surely Two NI in HD had got to be a higher priority than Channel Islands getting One in HD.

Silly technical question from a Freeview point of view but is the feed viewers currently receive effectively already regionalised so it is just case of adding the content and labelling it correctly or will people, even in macro regions, need to retune as the feed will technically be replaced?

I have it good authority that that date (21/10/2021) is about 12 months adrift for the launches.

No, it's more complicated. Currently the PSB 3 mux only has a handful of different versions, basically for Scotland, NI, and Wales (that accommodate BBC HD in those nations, plus STV HD and UTV HD), plus a few macro regions in England that accommodate BBC 1 HD 'Red Screen Version' and some ITV HD regions.

PSB3 needs many more codecs to increase the granularity to accommodate all BBC (and ITV) regions and sub regions. (In England and Scotland)

While it's finally overdue, most viewers in England will still have to watch regional news in SD, alas upscaled.
