New BBC Sport Virtual Studio debuts

I certainly think the floor looks better with the Masters/Formula E logo and colours than the BBC Sport version above. Not sure why really - possibly the BBC Sport wordmark is too big.

You can see a lot more of the original set as the camera pans to Eilidh from 1:15 in the day one Masters highlights below - it does look a little like the rowing set:

It looks naff, I don’t know why they don’t just redress the newsnight or even the one show studio or something, would look loads better (guess this is in Salford, there must be something similar around though)

As said above, the best use of cgi is to create something fantastical which cannot exist in the real world, but this could easily be reproduced physically, it would look loads better if it was, and doesn’t really add anything. It’s more of a case of we are doing this because we can I think.
trust me, I'm a lobster.

So they kind of want it to look like they're hosting from opposite the window. Not sure if I like or not.

Re: John Inverdale - I'm sure he said he will still do Wimbledon and I think Matthew Pinsent has hosted much of the non-Olympic rowing for quite some time now.

The virtual studio is showing its weakness with a pale background for the gymnastics today. Close-ups aren't bad, but longer shots make Matt Baker look like a Simpsons character with a black border around his face.

Take it that proves Jon's theory to be correct then with the football studio also on air at the same time for Football Focus.

Looks good - and glad they've put a "screen" behind them. Thought that would improve the set and it absolutely does.

Is it being used permanently?

it says 'for one night only' right there on the tweet.

That said, when was the last time MOTD didn't come from its regular studio? Feels a bit weird to have two similar sets for the one programme.

Although it also says the first edition from there. Suspect they're piloting it for the Euros.

Tonight's Match of the Day didn't even have a studio!

The BBC NI continuity announcer said it was "a change to the schedule" so I guess this was a special, hastily arranged programme due to the rescheduling of Man Utd. v. Liverpool. Anyway, three different studio set ups in the last three Match of the Days

It's so much better with a large 'screen' like this as it makes the background much less prominent in general and means the contents on the screen becomes the focal point of the set instead - and eyes are much more forgiving to that as we subliminally know what's on a screen is always "fake" so as a result this looks more real. The fake, computer generated background is never going to look completely real because no matter how well done it is our eyes pick up on something not being quite right, especially when it's completely open and exposed as it has been in this new studio so far.

This new virtual studio is basically a replacement for the previous 'secondary studio' (the one that MOTD2 Extra used to come from), is it not? I can't answer your question precisely, but the occasional midweek MOTD did come from that secondary studio in the past. The notable one I can think of was the Monday evening when Leicester won the title in 2016.

I would think they will have the budget to hire out the larger MOTD studio space for the duration of the Euros, with that secondary one coming in for the final round of groups secondary fixture. They’ll have more room for free guests with a bigger platform and desk in that set too. They’ll also need a free studio space for any other sport that’s taking place around the same time.

I imagine they’ll do something different with the MOTD virtual set though.

It’s a wonder they didn’t just plonk the normal MOTD set onto the green screen in the secondary studio.
