With events such as the Euros and Olympics set to be hosted from Salford this year, for obvious reasons, a new virtual BBC Sport quietly debuted yesterday during coverage of the Figure Skating Championships.

As far as I'm aware the usual virtual stadium set has so far only been used by BBC Sport for football - other events such as the Six Nations tend to come from other purpose built sets. The studio has been used for Bitesize though.

I would hope that Sports events coverage, if presented entirely from Salford this year, will be split between the CSO set and the converted space that has was used for the 2018 Winter Olympics and also that year's commonwealth games

Let’s hope we get a similar virtual setup for this years Olympics than we did in the year 2000, the last time we had a virtual set up from the UK.

I imagine this virtual set will be the basis of the Olympics Studio. With the Euros coming from a modified version of the football set.
I wish there was a bit more to link the two set styles together. Maybe a similar desk or something.
Do we know it’s actually a different studio to the football one? Or just a different platform and virtual set? I get the impression this may be occupying the same space in the BBC Sport centre as the second studio once did.

Looks pretty nice from what I can see. I've not seen it full-size or in motion though – and from the images you've shared Brekkie, I can't tell if the 'outside' view moves realistically?
It's one bugbear of mine when sets use screens as windows. In real life, the background would remain effectively stationary when the camera pans or whatever (tl;dr parallax), but because the background is actually 4 metres behind the presenters instead of 300, it behaves just as wallpaper should. Admittedly, it's hard to fix that when it's a real screen, but in a VR environment it should work 'properly'. Wow, I'm rambling… sorry.

I think the thing is, they would probably need more than one VR studio, if they’re going to start presenting stuff other than football from a VR set.
That why I’m assuming it might be a different space, because other sports aren’t going to be able to use it for most of Saturday, resulting in them having to have a different look.

The virtual set looks pretty awesome, although I worry that its going to be like most things: a temporary set which never gets used again after their events have concluded. Hopefully the BBC make good use of the studio for many other sporting events, allowing for a modernisation of broadcast output of all sporting events (an example that springs to mind easily for me would be snooker, which could use a graphics upgrade in some places, perhaps a virtual studio is something they could make use of)

Even if just used for major events it'll probably get an outing for the Euros, Olympics and Winter Olympics next year, and then maybe remain available for use alongside the football version. IMO it's too soon to ditch that but I'd rather see them use this for the Euros to give it the feeling of a bigger event.
There is also the World Athletics Championships next July, which I think even without restrictions as they are taking place in Eugene, Oregon just days before the Commonwealth Games would likely be hosted from the UK anyway. I assume there is also the European Sport Championships again next year.

They had two earlier efforts in 1998 which were presumably in the UK for the Winter Olympics and Commonwealth Games. Can only find a brief glimpse in videos of the titles for each, both of which are worth watching in their own right.

Seeing it in action isn’t quite as impressive as the stills.
The “set” itself looks really nice, and the movement works with the camera movements. But the “view” through the windows looks rather shoddy in my opinion. Cheap. But then, anything animated to look “real” often does. I think they’d be much better off creating nicely decorated and branded solid walls as a background which isn’t actually trying to replicate a real world view, or at least creating more elements in the foreground of the windows (thicker and textured frames for example) so the fake view is obscured a little more.

I do think as you say less is more when it comes to virtual real views - it shouldn't be the main focus. Even a "screen" behind the presenters might help.
I suspect though for the Tokyo they'd put a bit more effort in than we had with Stockholm. If they did use it for the Euros though with them being across Europe (which still seems to be the plan) it'll be trickier than usual where you can select a familar view from the host country. Wembley is the main host of course, but would be quite ironic to set up a studio in Salford with a virtual view of London considering all the politics that moved them up there. Perhaps for that reason the standard football studio will be used.
