I have a question about ITN HQ. I was visiting London yesterday and realised I was on Grey’s Inn Road. I walked past ITN Headquarters and was surprised to see neither the ITN logo (or any mention of it), nor the logos of any and of the news programmes they produce.

I see online that ITN don’t own the building (it’s marketed as 200 Gray’s Inn Road) but was this always the case? I’d have thought a prominent tenant would at least have their name shown. Is there any ITV branding at TVC?

ITV do not own the studios they used at Television Centre, those studios are owned by BBC Studioworks and are hired out to ITV Daytime under a sublet agreement. The ITV logo is only seen usually as part of the main logo for the ITV Daytime shows based at Television Centre. So e.g. This Morning logo would have the smaller ITV logo alongside it typically.

ITN as a name and branding has been gradually eradicated by ITV from any on screen presentation since the 2013 rebrand. ITV prefer viewers now recognise ITV News as just that ITV News, with ITN now becoming a redundant name. Shame, as that branding has provided some of the best ever news coverage and presentation in British broadcasting history - however just as the old ITV regional names of Granada, LWT etc have been largely dumped from on screen branding, the same has been true with ITN.

ITN only occupy a portion of 200 Grays Inn Road, with the main newsroom on one floor, two basement studios and the atrium studio used by Channel 4 News.

It’s a shame really the tv world has changed too much that the institutions we grew up with cease to exist with studios being shut down leaving only memories of a bygone age.

I do plan a visit to London to pay homage to these great studios though.

you’re forgetting the newsrooms of C4 & C5, ITN’s managers, the many different parts of ITN Productions plus all the ITN edit suites that get used for all sorts of stuff including Love Island. ITN may be a redundant name on ITV, but the brand remains strong in media world.

That's right, it is quite an extensive operation. They even have the lower floors of the adjoining building across Coley Street. I'm not sure what's over that side now, although I do remember seeing the film vault, sat truck garage amongst other engineering type departments. Things have probably changed since then, though.

ITN are involved with an awful lot of non-ITV stand-alone productions and programming apart from what they produce for ITV.

There’s really not much to see at all - very underwhelming. The “200 Grey’s Inn Road” branding was very minimal.

The last time I stayed in London, I was at a Travelodge not too far from Kings Cross (but not the one at Kings Cross) and by chance I passed ITN on my way to it, and I didn’t realise ITN was there until I walked past it, it’s not as recognisable say as Television Centre or the London Studios.

Well, considering that this is what comes up on Google Street View (I've just checked) for 200 Gray's Inn Road. I agree, somewhat underwhelming given the "historicalness" of that place in television news history. Dare I say it, where are the big decals saying "ITN" or "ITN PRODUCTIONS" at least?

Last time I walked down Gray's Inn Road, I said to myself "Oh, is ITN somewhere around here?", and then Tom Bradby walked straight past me.

There's a newsagent in Gray's Inn Road which, certainly a few years ago, still had the logo for The European proudly emblazoned on the outside.

I have spoken with someone who worked at ITN in the mid 1990s, and she said that the ITN logo was not seen much in the building even when she worked there. So maybe this is not new for the building?

There’s a good reason the building never had any branding. The IRA were extremely active at the time and buildings such as 200 GIR were targets.

I visited ITN at both Well’s Street and GIR and both were unbranded. In fact you’d be hard pressed to know what was inside the Wells Street building.
