These videos are like buses - you wait years and two come along at once. Another full edition from a year earlier - June 1988. This is the same structure - ITN and CNN World News encased in Morning News, but the ITN World News presentation is still the original 1987 version with John Suchet (speaking very slowly for the foreign audience!).

Looking at these videos, there was very little live content really. Most of the ITN reports were probably repackaged from the day before, the headlines are recapped a few times and huge chunks are taken up with the two taped editions of World News. It basically remained virtually unchanged until it was axed in the relatively recent past, save for the reduction to 30 minutes by axing the World News segments.
Although they look rather primitive, my guess is this was quite pioneering really. Am I right in saying this was the first real attempt at overnight news in the UK? I don't think the BBC did it until News 24 launched about a decade later and Sky News didn't start up until a year after ITN were in full swing with their "Into the Night" bulletins.

ITV were the first television channel in the UK to go full 24 hours by 1988, region by region went 24 hours, with Ulster Television being the last in October 1988.
ITN provided two short news summaries during the night - I was told that these news summaries were usually not aired live in most regions. Instead ITN provided the summaries at 1.00am and 3.00am, and it was up to each region to chose where to place them. As overnight programming on ITV back then was not a networked thing - region by region had different night time programme strands.
This was the reason why the overnight news summaries never had a "Good Morning" welcome at the start, and always ended with "I will have more news later" - never stating a time, as the next bulletin would vary depending on each region.
BBC overnight news on BBC One and BBC Two was non existent - except only in extreme cases such as the Gulf War of 1991 or the death of Princess Diana. BBC One close down routine usually had the announcer informing viewers that BBC Radio 2 was on the air through the night, with news bulletins on the hour.
BBC News 24 launched in 1997, and with it came the first overnight news service on BBC One.

I think they used the record a special closing of the World News specifically for the UK airing to lead into the commercial break. I'm sure the proper edition for Superchannel had a full closing theme and end credits; this one ends with a brief musical sting over a static slide of the logo. It's a pity that a programme like ITN World News no longer exists.....
I would also say it's a great pity that the ITN Morning News no longer exists. The fact that it had become just another 30 minute bulletin, meaning that it had lost that unique feel it had when it launched always bugged me. I liked the hour long version, whereas the 30 minute version really just felt like another bulletin.

I was a massive fan of the ITN Morning News. I remember the very first edition with Zeinab Badawi. It was also the only bulletin where you could sometimes hear the long close version of that fabulous music. It also had a very large production team as shown in this long close.

I would also say it's a great pity that the ITN Morning News no longer exists. It's surprising it lasted as long as it did although it has kind of returned with GMB introducing the 30 minute bulletin at 6am.

I wonder what the audience figures would be if they ever did return the Morning News to 5.30am? I suspect it could be even lower than GB News figures.
Morning News for me growing up, and as I was a part insomniac at times, always signalled the start of a new day was approaching.

For me it was a sign I was up too early. 
To be honest I think I only ever watched it on days when the news got a new look, but there was always the risk you'd get up early and they'd hold off the relaunch until the daytime bulletins anyway.

I have a question about ITN HQ. I was visiting London yesterday and realised I was on Grey’s Inn Road. I walked past ITN Headquarters and was surprised to see neither the ITN logo (or any mention of it), nor the logos of any and of the news programmes they produce.
I see online that ITN don’t own the building (it’s marketed as 200 Gray’s Inn Road) but was this always the case? I’d have thought a prominent tenant would at least have their name shown. Is there any ITV branding at TVC?

Is there any ITV branding at TVC? ITV do not own the studios they used at Television Centre, those studios are owned by BBC Studioworks and are hired out to ITV Daytime under a sublet agreement. The ITV logo is only seen usually as part of the main logo for the ITV Daytime shows based at Television Centre. So e.g. This Morning logo would have the smaller ITV logo alongside it typically.
ITN as a name and branding has been gradually eradicated by ITV from any on screen presentation since the 2013 rebrand. ITV prefer viewers now recognise ITV News as just that ITV News, with ITN now becoming a redundant name. Shame, as that branding has provided some of the best ever news coverage and presentation in British broadcasting history - however just as the old ITV regional names of Granada, LWT etc have been largely dumped from on screen branding, the same has been true with ITN.
ITN only occupy a portion of 200 Grays Inn Road, with the main newsroom on one floor, two basement studios and the atrium studio used by Channel 4 News.

ITN used to own the site, and indeed were responsible for the entire redevelopment from The Times newspaper printing operation to today’s building using Norman Foster architects. But then they ran into financial difficulty and sold it off to a consortium including the BT pension scheme at the time. So now they lease back what space they need.
