Channel Four News - Now from Leeds

I'd be interested to know some more about how the Leeds studio works technically. I'm guessing something similar to the Sky Westminster studio with cameras and sound fibred back as outside sources into ITN at GIR rather than having a full gallery on site?

My guess is the set up isn't much more than a regular 'outside' presentation set up. With lots of smoke and mirrors to make it look more impressive than it really is (though that's stock in trade for telly anyway). It was pretty underwhelming, Cathy's lock down broadcasts from her home looked better

The C4 newsroom only got a refit a couple of years ago. There are no plans for a refit again, other than bringing the tech in line with ITV News’ refit.

Isn't GIR being converted to a full SMPTE 2110 infrastructure at present ?

ITV News is having a major newsroom refit that means the whole operation is moving into the basement in the next couple of months. This includes new technology, which Channel 4 News will also be using. So in that sense, yes, C4N will get a refit, but they’re not having a huge revamp / moving out while it’s done. That happened a few years ago when they moved into the atrium temporarily.

I can’t tell you what’s happening with C4 News presentation or studio.

As I thought it looks so much better in the dark where it becomes generic city backdrop. A really nice recreation of the London set though, but feels completely pointless.

Correct, this is exactly what I have said. Fortunately I can tell you what is happening with the studio - it'll be built from scratch and will reflect a new Channel 4 Newsroom.

He is now the longest serving newsreader there, so I think he deserves it, good luck on his new role as the face of Channel 4 News

Matt, Cathy and Jackie continue as presenters alongside their main roles. Fatima and Ayshah will stay as stand-ins.

They're also going to hire a Leeds presenter which again is a great move.

Some weird graphics going on tonight on Channel 4 News. Live graphics were in the wrong font and excruciatingly uncentered, guest name graphics were also in the wrong font but seemed to overlap at times with the correct graphics, while no graphics animated properly, they only faded on and off. It was even a different shade of purple!

To top it off, the video wall in Leeds seemed incapable of producing report title graphics and showed interference and lagging at the start. The whole programme was a bit unpolished tonight.







Is production coming from Leeds somewhat? It was anchored mainly from Leeds but also London. I think it was the Government's announcement while the programme aired to proceed with the sale of Channel 4

Thanks [mention]Brekkie[/mention], makes perfect sense now. I didn't know Grays Inn Road was ITN's headquarters so didn't look at that thread.

Heheheh. According istockphoto when Google'd shows it as Leeds. LOL Their mistake. But visually Leeds isnt a well known UK city Internationally sadly. Im sure they can muster the talent they need in the 4 largest UK city. All the best. Even though its like CTV deciding to upsticks from Toronto, passing over Vancouver and Montreal, deciding on Edmonton or Calgary as its homebase. Its certainly different. But im sure Ch4 will make it a success in good old Leeds!

CTV would certainly skip Montreal because despite it having the largest Anglophone population in Quebec it's still majority French. The Quebec government over the decades purposely made sure Montreal's Anglophone minority remained a minority.
Global's master control for all stations are in Calgary. CTV's master control for Western Canada are in Calgary as well.

Hahaha you are right about linqustics. I was just using city population as an example. Yeah you are right about master control, NBC and other networks do that as well. But Global's HQ and decision-makers remain in Toronto though. As does their corporate parent Corus
