Big changes for CBC News. THE NATIONAL, the CBC's nightly newscast of record, has finally dropped their multiple hosts and named  Adrienne Arsenault as lead anchor.  Initially the re-tooled broadcast has 4 host presenting from across the coutnry. This was pared back to three. Andrew Chang and Ian Hanomansing and Adrienne Arsenault.  This move makes all Canadian nightly newscasts presented by women. CBC, Global and and CTV. Go Canada!

Having said that. Adrienne will only present the Mon-Thr programme. Ian Hanomansing will present the Friday and Sunday broadcasts. Also CBC is creating a new free streaming news channel. Andrew Chang will get his own programme on the streaming network. Ian wiill have several shows he is working on including an interview programme.  It will draw content from the national and local operations. Its unclear if this channel will be available outside Canada. Currently CBC News has a "jukebox" channel available on several streaming services in the US. There is nothing live apparently, it does have seem to present a full edition of THE NATIONAL week nights. But the rest is clipped together stories and interviews clips with a CBC full screen logo and a wipe.

The CBC is creating a new free streaming news channel.........what about the CBC News Network? This new free streaming channel seems nothing but an unnecessary duplication to me

CBC News Netowrk is a paytv channel. Think MSNBC and NBC News NOW.  But this CBC effort doesnt seem as robust as NBC News NOW with rolling news or at least they didnt announce that it would. The streaming world is in the wild wild west stage in North America. Global News was already the first a few years ago and they have Global News 24 and streams for each local channel. CItytv now has a streaming news channel for Toronto an its local markets and now CBC is going to have a streaming channel. Citytv seems to have made a smart move integrating their local 24hr all news radio stations with their CityNews brand across Canada. 680News became CityNews680 with branding and theming similar to CItyNews. That move pumps content into both outlets on tv and radio and utilizes both staff. If you are covering a fire for example its stupid to have staff from the Radio and TV side and one reporter and file reports for both outlets. That just leaves CTV as the outlier with the paytv CTV News Channel and they also took over CP24 from Citytv in Toronto back in the day. I would expect we will hear something in a few months or next year the way things are going.  They will probably curate local streaming news channels for the other major stations aside from Toronto because they dont want to cannibalize CP24. Which is the mega successful local news channel.

These local streaming channels really took off in North America thanks to CBSN and the CBSN Locals. Now all the CBS, ABC and NBC O&O channels all have local streaming news channels available 24/7 for editorial output for breaking news and election coverage.

NBC is making money off Peacock...so there is clearly money to be made. All at the expense of paytv.

It's an area where we're really behind in the UK and have to wonder if the BBC should just call it quits on the news channel and focus on a streaming solution instead.
