But we have all this sort of stuff happening in the centenary special as well, under the 'existing' (in terms of air time) production team.

Massive navel gazing in two consecutive episodes is not really what the show needs at the moment, in my view. Spoken as a fan as well.

The current era of the show has lost huge numbers of viewers and is generally perceived as a flop. Opening up the next era with "look how wonderful we used to be, but aren't any more" isn't the best way forward, in my view.

It'd be similar to having the opening episode of the revival in 2005 starting off by having classic doctors and characters appearing. They didn't even try any of that until the second series. You need to win the audience back first.

Am I alone about being excited by the pair of them coming back, however brief?

I do think this era of Dr Who has lost its steam somewhat. Don't think it's Jodie's fault even though I was very unsure about a female lead to start off with - I was very wrong about that.

Just hope the new chap can breathe some life and excitement back into it with brill new scripts. I root for each new Doctor to be great but I kind of feel Ncuti will have a harder job than most because the whole thing feels tired. Go on my son - smash it and keep the program on the air.

I agree about Jodie, she is a fine actor and in the episodes where she was well written she came over very well. 

Ncuti has his work cut out but from what I've seen of him I think he's easily up to it. He'll have decent material to work with as well under RTD.

1. It's the start of a new era which isn't the time to be looking backwards
2. There are other Doctors besides Tennant, great as he was.

It's worth remembering that their appearance is for the 60th anniversary. David Tennant similarly appeared in the 50th anniversary, along with a guest appearance by Tom Baker. I seem to recall they had hoped to include Christopher Eccleston, but as he didn't wish to be involved they had John Hurt as the 'War Doctor'.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are further announcements regarding the anniversary special, and quite possibly including other past Doctors appearing.

Christopher Eccleston has changed his attitude towards the role fairly recently, and has started playing him again in Audio stories.  Potentially he might be open to the idea of appearing on screen again for the 60th, although I think he has said he wouldn't want to appear with other Doctors.  So maybe a stand alone episode with him might be possible.

He quit after falling out with the very people just about to take over the running of the show, so I think that would be highly unlikely.  Eccleston has been quite clear recently that the idea he had any issue with the role of the Doctor was something peddled by the BBC.

I know. I totally get *why* they are doing it, I just feel that the start of a new era isn't the right time.

Multi-Doctor stories should not be at the start of a new Doctor's 'reign'.

Part of the fun of multi-Doctor stories is seeing how the previous Doctors play off against the current one, and you need the current one to be established for that to even work dramatically.

However - I fully acknowledge RTD is a genius at this sort of thing he knows both television and Doctor WHo a lot better than I do.
So I will happily wait and see what transpires.

I'd just personally rather get on with seeing the new Doctor - who looks to be an inspired casting choice - than see Tennant yet again.

He will not be working with RTD, Collinson and others again, I'll wager. They are in charge again now, and it was them he had issues with in the first place.

That he's doing the audios is fantastic (see what I did there?), I think it's the best we will ever get.

Additionally, from the little he's given away about why he wasn't happy, I fully support his decision not to return, as disappointing as that's always been from a dramatic perspective. 
Would have been easy for him to take the money and the glory, he's not that sort of a man though, clearly.
