You get a brief glimpse of the new radio logos in this video here:

Moving this post from the CBBC and CBeebies thread…
DTV post_id=49876 time= user_id=1056 Wrote:BBC iPlayer now has the new channel logos on individual programmes (though not yet on the TV guide) - this includes BBC News and Parliament (brighter shade of red) who supposedly aren't rebranding until the spring. It also includes the CBBC and CBeebies logo as they are now, so I think that is a fairly good confirmation that both those two are only going to see minor changes to the branding.Interestingly, the Radio 1 channel has the new logos on their “programmes”. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p0...omingvenom (website only, I can’t see it on the app).

Very disappointing that they've gone full on generic Reith numerals for the radio logos - looks very reminiscent of the bus route number stickers on the bus stops where I live - even more so with 1X, 1D, 5X etc.

The radio logos (from what we've seen) look like a sensible halfway house, retaining the equity of the old logos by using the same colours and circles. The old numerals were fine and have lasted well, but the "BBC Radio" bit looked awkwardly tacked on. They could have been retained but I can see the thinking of freshening things up, in line with the new design language. And that's the switch that's been flipped - no longer will the BBC part of the branding have to work around the other elements. It is (or should be - we can criticise the implementation when it happens) the other way round now, while still allowing a bit of flexibility.

It does feel quite odd to kind of put more emphasis on the "Radio" prefix after a couple of years of them emphasising "Sounds" so much.

The priority is driving people to BBC Sounds to listen to Radio 1, etc. This goal and the wider hierarchical reorganisation (Sounds above Radio, iPlayer above TV) can be achieved without mucking around with station names. Some may take the view that the word "radio" is becoming anachronistic, I guess, but I would disagree. The distribution method of a curated audio stream is irrelevant. And in the BBC's case, the word is a strong brand asset I wouldn't give up in a hurry and would be keen to emphasise having effective ownership over.

With radio you can definitely see a gradual changeover happen across the stations and the podcasts that’ll end with the adoption of the new symbols - there’s been podcast artwork that now has a large BBC logo too centre, I noticed 6 Music and other stations refresh their graphics for presenters (6M is a little reminiscent of Factory Records/New Order imo), and now the new sonic themes on stations like 5 Live.
So all the flair and excitement will be happening around a solid and simple logo scheme, a little bit like what we’ve seen on TV this week. At least that’s my guess.

I've said it before: Radio 1 has a better visual brand than BBC One.
Write that down in your copybook now

The off-centre '1' will take some getting used to. Looks decent enough though.

I think the BBC Radio looks better than the Gill version.
It’s a shame the numbers are dropping some of the nice touches like the bass clef and quotation mark.

Seems to be a running theme across the radio and tv channel branding. They need to bring the personality back into the identities. I understand the use of Reith but don’t strip the little quirks out of the logos! That’s what made them unique and clever… |
