Terribly sad news. For me, Boycie was a highlight of OFAH and that was entirely down to John Challis. Fantastically funny and he seemed such a nice person too. R.I.P.

You do have the fact he was only bought in for one episode, yet ended up becoming a regular, which shows he made a good impression on people.
Admittedly that was the case for most of what became the ensemble cast (certainly Trigger and Denzil at least), I think the original idea was that Del, Rodney and Grandad (and possibly the Nag's head barmaid) were the only characters who were going to recur- was certainly the case in the first series. Going a bit OT here, but Last Of The Summer Wine is another show which started out not really having recurring characters (apart from Sid, Ivy and Nora), then also ended up becoming an ensemble show, even more so than OFAH did- you could argue the supporting cast were getting more screentime than the main trio by the 90s and 00s.
