American Song Contest

Wondering why didn't they go with 'Amerivision Song Contest' (or something along those lines) to relate to the original 'Eurovision' brand...

Out of interest, there was a US trademark for that exact phrase but it lapsed in August 2016.

And there is a current trademark for "Amerivision", which I gather may well be associated with a certain American Eurovision blogger who has a certain notoriety in the community...

Well it doesn’t exactly roll of the tongue, does it?

I guess the idea is, the format is strong enough in its own right and it will be a new concept for most of the audience. So there is no value in linking it the brands in the way.

I do think somewhere it’ll lose the magic of the original and will just seem like a new American Idol style show.

Well with a country of 330 milion people from all over the world that have emigrated/enslaved to the country since its creation has resulted in the birth of ROCK, RAP, JAZZ, and BLUES. I would say there is a wide variety of music to showcase.
There are many genres and some that are uniquely American such as jazz, blues, country, bluegrass, rock, rock and roll, R&B, pop, hip hop, soul, funk, gospel, disco, house, detroit techno, ragtime, doo wop, folk music, americana, boogaloo, as well as others that a extremely popular like tejano, reggaeton, surf, and salsa. And dont forget the hundreds of native american tribes and their unique languages and music and songs found in the deserts of the southwest to the people found in the frozen parts of Alaska also we can include the French speaking Cajun people in the bayous of Louisiana and the far northern forests of Maine.. So yeah you might be missing something.

There are 41 countries in Eurovision. You dont see 41 different genres of music. Most are pop, rock or rap.
Dont hate. Congratulate.

NBC has now launched a website.

You have to be 16 years or older, a citizen or a legal resident. Persons here on a visa are not allowed to enter. You can already be signed to a label, have an administrative or production deal. However the song can not be something already published commercially (such as iTunes or Spotify). However if it’s been shared promotionally on Facebook, Instagram, SounCloud, TikTok it’s good to go but will have to be removed.
If you wrote the song you have to find someone to perform it.

Production will be about four weeks sometime between February 11 and April 12, 2022 likely taking place in Atlanta or Los Angeles (the two major film hubs in the US).

Will the Liberal NE give anything to South?

I just can't see that style of voting system working on Anerican TV. They can't even spell maths, yet alone do it.

I don't think our American members will appreciate that kind of comment. Please keep that kind of comment off the forum.

If you can't have a slight ribbing at cultural differences in a Eurovision based thread where on earth can you have it? Wink

Sarky comments aside I do stand by the point that I don't think the voting system will translate at all to US network TV considering it doesn't have the history it has here and virtually all US talent shows have now axed their separate results shows in favour of announcing results either at the end of the show or the beginning of the next one. If they do use the 12-10-8 system I think it'll be done with minimal explanation and they'll just have the winners/qualfiiers revealed in a similar manner to the semi-finals.

Technically also how feasible is a state by state system across the US - I guess it can be done by app but they're not going to want to over complicate things. Even if the technicalities can be addressed not sure they could sell California and Wyoming getting the same weighting in the vote to the audience. I also suspect it would be considered unpatriotic to be unable to vote for the representative from your state. Ultimately there are key cultural differences (which go beyond math) which sees European shows have to adapt to the US market to survive.

I imagine they will use the JESC system, whereby there's a Jury Vote and then an online public vote, where points are distributed in such a way that if a song gets 20% of the popular vote, it gets 20% of the available points (58 x 50 = 2900). Either that or different affiliates will carry different phone numbers but that's massively open to abuse.

If they do have any kind of jury I could see them simplifying it to one juror per state and perhaps just one vote each.

Guess it is wait and see though - on the one hand not much point in taking a format and stripping out some of it's unique values, but on the other not uncommon for a new show established abroad to be remade under the instruction to make it more like popular established shows.

I found this article from way back in Nov. 2020, and it contains some insight into how ASC could/will go. Take it the way you want.

Quote:Each state will have the right to determine how to select their artist and song for the main contest, be it a statewide final or an internal selection. The [ASC] show would take place in 5 “heats” of 10 states each, competing for 4 spots for the next round. The 20 states that advance will be organized into 2 semi-finals. Five states will qualify for the [Grand Final] from each semi, which means 10 states will battle for the ASC trophy.

The format of the voting will vary as the show progresses. In the heats, they will use a system similar to Melodifestivalen. In the semi-finals and the grand final, however, the voting process will be identical to the one in Eurovision.

Isn't the new Eurovision voting system based on Melodifestivalen anyway?

So it's basically going to be an 8 part series of probably 2 hour shows. Will be interesting to see how they would handle any state selection shows if they do happen and how those are scheduled.

It's based on the Melodifestivalen final, or specficially the post-2016 voting system is. This was bought in to keep the tension heightened, as before if one country was winning by a landslide, it completely sucked out the energy from the last 20 minutes of the show.

I assume the semis will follow the Melodifestivalen heat system in that there's two rounds of voting. The winner of the first round goes through to the final, then the winner of the second round, with the two artists behind going to Andra Chansen. It's not clear whether such a "wildcard" round will be used in the ASC.
