Quote:The Eurovision Song Contest is going stateside as NBC secures the 'American Song Contest' - a co-production between Propagate and Universal Television Alternative Studio, a division of Universal Studio Group, with the executive producer of 'The Voice' at the helm.

The show will feature live performances, representing all 50 states, 5 United States territories and the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C, competing to win the country's vote for the ‘Best Original Song’.

An incredible solo artist, duo, DJ or a band will represent each location performing an original song, celebrating the different styles and genres across America.

The live Contest consists of three rounds as the acts compete in a series of Qualifying Rounds, followed by Semi-Finals and the ultimate Grand Final where one state or territory will emerge victorious.

In addition to fan votes, a jury of music industry professionals will also lend their expertise to the competition.

Whatever happened to the Asian version?

As for this - be interesting to see how it does but it's got car crash written all over it. I just don't think the Americans will get it and it'll end up being a country bore fest.

I would guess Covid-19 didn’t help. Also China which presumably would be the biggest market for this version, did seem to fall out with Eurovision over gay censorship.

Interesting to note the EBU have sold the rights to a consortium which includes Christer Bjorkman and they've now found a partner for Broadcast. This is now at a long enough distance, twice removed, so as not to cause embarrassment and financial risk if it fails.

I wonder if this might fill the hole left by the Golden Globes next year on NBC.

All they need now is a wry Irish commentator to dramatically feign surprise when Nebraska give their twelve points to Kansas for the fifth year running...

Practically speaking would state by state voting even be possible?

If it worked for American Idol, it'll work for this.

I fail to see how this format transfers to the US. Does music really change from state to state? Can a piece of music really be so popular in California and totally unpopular in Rhode Island for example? Or am I missing something?

Event television. There's still power in something that's watched together, and the feeling you're watching something at the exact same time as lots of other people.

as an american, i can see this being popular. if shows like american idol and the voice are popular, and they are, then this could be just as popular i believe. state pride can be a big thing here in the states.
