2021 Local Elections Coverage

Looks like the early evening BBC regional bulletins were doubled in length to 8 minutes tonight. ITV made do with the normal short bulletin.

Something I never seem to understand is how broadcasters seem to be able to have no issues doing on-location interviews with little delay during normal news bulletins, but when it comes to the elections, suddenly every down-the-line interview has 5 - 10 second delays, the kind you see when conducting such interviews across countries. Often those delays are between relatively local locations (ie a place in Glasgow to .... a place in Glasgow)

For me, it makes the interviews cringy to watch, mainly because of the huge delay between the interviewer and the interviewee.

Is it just a case that so many cameras are set up that they overall end up with a slightly longer delay compared to "normal" [normal being regular interviews outwith election periods] or is it some other reason?

In the BBC case are they routing most outside sources via Elstree which presumably would add additional hops in?

I'd say Kate is the better newsreader of the two personally.

London Mayor results expected soon, though doubt they'd prioritise them over Match of the Day. It doesn't really seem to have got much focus on the national news at least, even though I suspect the electorate is similar in size to Scotland.

It felt like that was because the result was going to be so late in the day. There was some coverage of it but I guess equally there isn't much fallout with Sadiq being re-elected compared to other results.

I do like Sophie, but Kate must be pissed off. She does the teatime and late bulletins practically every Saturday, now they've decided she isn't senior enough to do the late bulletin in the aftermath of the elections?

I missed the intro, did they use the ITV News at Ten branding?

I would add that the presenter doing the AR for both network and Scotland at Pacific Quay (though I don't remember his name?) was really good, comfortable with the graphics and really did know what he was talking about.

In my view these elections showed off what is best about the Pacific Quay and Central Square building, and the slight limitations of Studio B at NBH.

Sky were in an ad break and then quickly crashed out of it when the candidates came out so clearly they were paying attention.

NC should’ve scrapped the simulcast at 2300 like they did at 2100 so they could’ve had more time on the election. Especially since the mayor of London was being announced.

It's a weird decision from the BBC, especially considering that we all knew that the declaration was expected soon. Also the election of the Mayor of the UK's capital city is far more relevant/of interest to an international audience than most of the UK domestic Covid policies/briefings that BBC World News has covered in simulcasts over the past year.
