Guess that was down to the OB kit, driven down from Newcastle they had to work with.
Pedestal cameras were Marconi Mk 9s, hand helds were Sony 330s. Mr [mention]Bluecortina[/mention] will beg to differ, but the Mk9 could produce some quite dreadful images (especially outside of the controlled environment of a studio)

Tyne Tees used Thomsons in their studios (and of course for The Tube). A lot better
