First - good job Tyne Tynes didn't cover Live Aid. I've watched some of the Quuen concert, and the angles are awful, and it may have been electrical interference, but the picture quality from some of the 'moshpit' peds, is dreadful. Blurry lines, ghosting, and longer than usual panning 'burn' imaging from the on stage lighting.
Guess that was down to the OB kit, driven down from Newcastle they had to work with.

Second. Sixty Minutes. I have a hazy recollection watching that programme one day, towards the end of the run, they mentioned and showed a brief clip, that Argentinan television had ripped off the format, right down to using the same opening titles and slapping over the local translation of the programme name on the lower third.

Pedestal cameras were Marconi Mk 9s, hand helds were Sony 330s. Mr [mention]Bluecortina[/mention] will beg to differ, but the Mk9 could produce some quite dreadful images (especially outside of the controlled environment of a studio)

Tyne Tees used Thomsons in their studios (and of course for The Tube). A lot better

Would I beg to differ? What I would say is that I think the Mk IX camera was capable of producing excellent pictures, but in order to do that they needed to be kept in tip top maintenance condition and from an operational adjustment perspective. It strikes me the probable average time allotted to align these cameras prior to a broadcast was generally not long enough in the sense that more time was needed than was generally available or allotted and in this respect Marconi failed to produce a camera chain that was fully fit for purpose. There is irony in this in the sense that Marconi made a camera chain that was designed from the ‘get go’ to be aligned with little more than a few button presses but in practice required more attention to detail. If you didn’t give the camera that attention to detail because of operational constraints then you were on a hiding to nothing in the longer term. Just my opinion of course.

Sixty Minutes was on when I was 10 and I love the futuristic-looking titles and theme music (although ISTR the tune dropped a couple of keys later on?).

This may have been one of the prompts that began my stirrings towards idents.

In the opening titles to Sixty Minutes there is a graphic that looks like a clock with a clock hand moving round. However the clock appears to be marked in to ten ‘hours’ rather than twelve . Any ideas why?

Someone on another forum was working at the Been at the time and pointed that out, and he was told that it wasn't supposed to be an actual clock but just a representation of one. Or that they cocked it up, you decide.

This was exactly the argument when someone questioned someone’s design of an eight pointed snowflake a few years ago

I remember as a child attempting to recreate the logo with the pieces from Trivial Pursuit, the geometry for that didn't work out either!

Yes, you're correct. The original version of the Sixty Minutes theme was used up until Christmas 1983, then a revamped version from January 1984 onwards. I remember feeling gutted when the revamped theme made its debut!

Recently watched a video on David Baldwin’s YouTube page regarding Sixty Minutes startups and there was one for the 1984 Budget. I was struck by how the logo was morphed into a representation of the Chancellor’s “Gladstone case” but the sight of David Dimbleby and guests in a black studio instead of the set looked odd.

This was in the middle of the Beeb's scene shifters' strike, which presumably had some effect.

You'll note David makes reference to there being no representative from Labour, which is because there was a strike on at the newspaper group David Dimbleby ran and so they refused to take part in any programme he was involved in.

I do recall occasional instances of people refusing to go on Question Time etc because of his newspaper enterprises.

I remember an interview with him (I think Desert Island Discs) where he said he effectively inherited the newspapers from his father when he died and might have even left Britain for America if it hadn't happened when it did.
