Firstly, they are an industry insider - I’d suggest it’d be useful to listen to the reality they describe.
Radio and TV are completely different mediums. Radio scripts are written to be more descriptive, whereas TV relies on the visual. So: starters for ten, different scripts that need to be written. In the BBC’s multi-station delivery of news, where do you suppose these new script writing time will be found? Maybe don’t give journalists loo breaks…
That’s before we even start with the sourcing of images, creating graphics, clipping sound, and studio set up. (Again, clue: this isn’t going to be found by simply getting a Newsbeat presenter to hold up an iPhone and start jabbering away in a radio studio).
I appreciate that you’re not necessarily coming at this with any experience, but I really would suggest you listen to those that do. We do a really hard job and simply suggesting we can knock out an entirely new programme without any impact is a bit insulting, frankly.
I know it's all about linear nowadays but you'd think they would push The Catch Up out on their socials and try and build the brand Outside Source style.
Heck, arguably a three minute cut of the explainer videos of the top story could have been a good way for BBC3 to meet their news obligation.

Hey there @rob , as I mentioned, I was referring to on-air staff. Nothing behind the scenes that [mention]Matrix[/mention] was talking about. But I take your advice on board in any case, and I certainly hope that others do that as well. Thanks for running the forum.

Even if you do ignore all the other things required to make a TV programme over a radio programme, where do you think the extra hours from the Newsbeat journalists are going to come from?
If you take 2 Newsbeat journalists and put them on The Catch Up instead, you need to fill the 2 now-spare Newsbeat shifts with... err... new on air staff.

I think Newsbeat wraps up now with the 5.45pm bulletin too - think the 7.30pm was ultimately dropped.
The closest to doing it for "free" with perhaps presenters who are a bit trendier than the standard BBC News team would be to hand responsibility to BBC Scotland and the Nine team, who quite frankly have done a good job of presenting BBC News in a younger, trendier way. That could work with an 8pm bulletin rather than just before 9pm and would tick a nations box too.
That would only work 4 days a week though - The Nine is The Seven on a Friday (presumably it was being moved for football so much on a Friday that BBC Scotland have decided to keep it at 1900 every Friday)
Also worth noting The Catch Up went out at 1927 last night, seemingly so not to interrupt the Angels of the North 'marathon'

There hasn't been a 7.30pm bulletin in about 100 years – in fact, I don't remember one at all. There used to be a 10pm one, which then moved to 9pm, then was ultimately dropped during the pandemic. You're right, though, the last thing now is the 5.45pm programme.
Used to be 7.30pm and midnight I think in my student days which does feel about 100 years ago now.
P S. Are these going out live - the way they're edited suggests they'd perhaps benefit from bring pre-recorded.

Isn't it normally only half and hour on Fridays though?
It doesn't have the same spring as 60 seconds, they could do with two slightly older presenters. I have yet to watch the channel. I assume the target is 18-34 so I just about make it!
