Yeah, I think Barry was fully aware that Dermott wasn’t Phillip. Don’t worry, it was all a joke.

I think Alisons reaction was a natural reaction, whether they were in on it or not. It did all come across as somewhat uncomfortable but I think that was the intention.

Worth remembering this is the same Barry (possibly as Dame Edna) who a few years ago in the One Show said to Alex Jones along the lines of "Hello again Christine, lovely to see you twice in one day". (The joke being that he'd been on Daybreak earlier that day, and how Alex looked similar to her predecessor.)

I think the funniest thing about the whole charade is the people who’ve reacted with “omg it’s a joke are you stupid it’s what he does”, when the whole point of it, assuming it was a joke, was that it looked like genuine confusion by BH.

I almost didn’t post my previous message because I knew there would be responses like this. Firstly I’m a big Alison supporter. I’ve said so much in this very thread, in fact. Secondly, I’m very aware that the guest was a comedian. But watching the clip - granted, out of context - I didn’t immediately see a comedian setting up and playing along with a joke. I saw a confused guest being laughed at by a presenter and not being aware of why.

Re-watching it, maybe he’s playing a blinder. If he’s setting up the joke and playing along then it’s brilliant. If he isn’t, the reaction from Alison is all rather uncomfortable. I genuinely don’t know which it is, and judging by his reaction - neither did Dermot.

Either way, there was no need to jump at me in response. I just felt the laughing went on too long without any thought to the possible embarrassment it could cause a guest. That’s all.

‘Maybe he’s playing a blinder’. Barry Humphries is a comedy legend so, yes. He is playing a blinder.

I accept I got this one wrong and didn’t realise what Barry Humphries was doing. A rare “whoosh” moment.

I’ve watched the full interview and it’s so much clearer in context. He does indeed set it up brilliantly, and is clearly leading up to the “punchline”. I’m not usually taken in by misleading headlines (e.g. “Guest makes mistake”)and cropped clips, but I guess even the best of us read things the wrong way or make mistakes sometimes.

Rather unfair to say someone doesn’t understand humour or nuance, or that they’re “programmed” to take anything in any specific way based on one little misunderstanding, though.

I don't typically watch This Morning. However, this popped up on my Twitter feed, and I can't just let this slip by. I am not a fan of Matt Hancock, his political views, or the actions that led to his resignation. However, I fail to see how this line of questioning was either relevant to the discussion, or appropriate in any discussion about his actions considering that he has already admitted that he broke the rules.

People with learning difficulties face enough challenges in life as it is. The last thing that is needed is for somebody to try and be open about the challenges they face, only for them to be pushed against because of something that is not relevant to the discussion.
