Yalda's Panorama documentary about the Return of the Taliban is utterly horrific and heartbreaking to watch

An interesting analysis of the amount of time the US networks have given Afghanistan over the last two decades - last year it was just 5 minutes each.

I suspect UK broadcasters would fair better, probably thanks to Newsnight and C4 News, but even then I think so much of the coverage over the last few years has been about the domestic and international politics of the situation rather than how the actions and potential actions, or inaction, of the West impact the people of Afghanistan.

It's a pity Channel 4 don't appear to have any episodes of Bremner, Bird, and Fortune on All4. They had some good episodes from around 2001 (e.g. Between Iraq and a Hard Place). From memory of a South Bank Show special the 'George Parr' interviews were very well researched in order to highlight absurdities in (then) topical events through satire.

This one from yesterday gives an insight to how UK soldiers are relying on Taliban fighters to assist with crowd control. And from today, travelling in the bus with evacuees from a compound passing others still waiting, and then boarding the plane to the UK. The big questions about this situation need to be asked, but these compelling human-level reports have been so humbling.

Thank you for sharing those reports. I've been watching BBC and indeed had not seen anything like that; really quite moving.

Bbc world news had an initial issue getting the studio to air, kept on flicking to trailers and back, what it did show was all the captions for the trailers and the logo is generated live, I was wondering why the world news logo wouldn’t appear for a frame or two, it makes sense now.

CNN have brought in Anderson Cooper for its rolling coverage, replacing John King and probably Erica Hill.

Unfortunately Sky's Stuart Ramsey and his team, who have been producing some excellent reports over the past two weeks, have been kicked out by the MoD/Whitehall despite objections from the commanders on the ground:

I suspect the prospect of the withdrawal being filmed in heart-breaking detail was a risk the government wasn't prepared to take, because this will end badly for thousands, I guarantee it.

A very sombre announcement into the BBC News at 6 on BBC ONE this evening.

Inside Politics and John King are off for two weeks. Anderson started at 12pm ET/5pm UK time so would have replaced Kate Bolduan's 2nd hour and is continuing into Erica's hour.

I can take Anderson doing rolling coverage of this. He's been on the ground and knows what he's talking about.
