Yalda back in her usual Studio C, literally took something significant and a 5 year wait before Yalda was allowed into Studio E.

Couldn't post yesterday, but I was highly impressed by Yalda Hakim's reporting. It was notable that the BBC didn't seem to have either a reporter or live pictures from Kabul yesterday morning, when Sky, CNN and others did – a striking contrast to days of old. But the context and analysis Yalda could interject even while interviewing guests (and the Taliban spokesperson) more than made up for this.

I wonder too how the Taliban spokesperson interview came about – Yalda had tweeted it before she appeared on air, so it wasn't impromptu. Interesting (but welcome) editorial decision to run it live on air, via her phone, while she was presenting rather than have her conduct it 'offline' and then played back. The situation was changing so rapidly, it deserved to be live.

The only thing they could have done was got a line-in to Yalda's phone to provide better sound quality. It's something pirate radio has done for years.

Overall, I was impressed by the coverage offered by BBC World, Sky News and Al Jazeera (didn’t have access to CNNI).

Yalda and Philippa Thomas oozed experience and calmness throughout their broadcast.

Mark Austin was brought into Sky News for the Sunday broadcast.

Today’s scenes from Kabul (I saw them on Sky News specifically) are astounding. Humans clinging to aircraft as they attempted to take-off will go down in history as one of those scenes (like the fall of Saigon) which everyone everywhere has seen.

I believe Lyse Doucet was also reporting LIVE from an aircraft whilst waiting to land in Kabul, on World News and World Service.

Lyse Doucet has just been telling Yalda why she wasn't able to land in Kabul on an Emirates flight and isn't sure as yet just how she'll eventually get there. Hovered over Kabul for an hour then had to return to Dubai.

It'll be interesting to see if Lyse ends up there at all, given that the city is currently closed to civilian flights. NBC's Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel is in Kabul with the NBC team, and on MSNBC just now he was asked about what the arrangements are for journalists. He was understandably cagey about saying too much, though in his previous report he'd mentioned that the team had left their long-time central Kabul office for 'somewhere hopefully safer', and in his live he was 'near the airport'. He indicated, though that they 'and other journalists' have been working out plans for how to leave the country, because although the Taliban have so far indicated they will tolerate foreign reporters who register with them there's scepticism for how safe they'll be in the long term.

I wonder how many foreign journalists will stay in the country, at least those whose embassies are closing and diplomatic staff leaving. I also wonder what contact there is at the moment between broadcasters and the US/UK militaries running evacuations – whether we might see journalists from the BBC/Sky/NBC etc. somehow catch a military flight out or something.

EDIT: Lyse is on Newshour now, and was introduced by James Coomarasamy as being in Dubai
Secunder Kermani, who was allowed access into a Taliban-run area and interview generals there last week, flew out yesterday and is in Islamabad, if I remember correctly.
They're making a lot of use from normal people on the ground, interviewing the intepretor they intreviewed yesterday once again today for the situation in the airport.

On the World Service, Newshour began an hour early yesterday at 19GMT, running through to its usual summer end time of 21GMT.

Lyse is now in BBC World Dubai, having been unable to land in Kabul. All flights from the UAE to Kabul have now been cancelled for the foreseeable future.
