Horse's mouth info:-
Eston Nab: The existing VP Tx antennas were turned to HP yesterday, the three PSB transmitters re-tuned to 27, 24, 21 (Bilsdale's allocations) the RBL antenna swung round to Pontop, and the power output of the three transmitters set to 'maximum'.
So in short, they are using the existing relay to provide a service to as wide as possible area. Ironically of course Eston Nab relay users will have to run a rescan
I presume those who normally receive a signal from any of the Bilsdale relays will need to rescan in the hope of picking up something from Eston Nab. A substantial percentage of the Bilsdale area’s population may be helped by the “new” Eston signal, but how much of the Bilsdale geographical area? Logistically, is there any “easy” or worthwhile way of other relays rebroadcasting “new Eston”?

Well those relays that get a sniff of Eston, will switch themselves back on (thinking it's 'mother'). Others might be better off being adjusted to take their feeds from Pontop. In both cases the viewers shouldn't need to rescan.
I think Whitby is the most 'major' relay of Bilsdale, so that got the D-Sat back up very quickly (in the grand scheme of things). I don't know what's next in the relay pecking order, Guisborough possibly ?
That won't be able to 'see' Eston or Pontop ? so assuming anything from or near Bilsdale not being established any time soon, perhaps D-Sat for that too ?

There's a tweet from Freeview Advice saying "hundreds of thousands of homes should see signal return today"
Freeview information need to be hyper careful currently. Clearly they’re not. Public facing messaging is failing badly. I suspect lack of detailed knowledge of the transmission system, not their personal faults but that of the operator.
At times like this oldies lament the direct access.to BBC and IBA engineering.

It depends what your reference source is. Bilsdale adopted 21, 24, and 27 at 700 MHz clearance a few years ago, then about 18 months ago PSB 1 and 3 swapped positions, so today it's 27, 24, 21.
Eston Nab original relay is now 23, 26, 48, which to be really confusing were three of Bilsdale's frequencies until about 2017!
BBC Reception were also saying BBC Tees was on 96.6, rather than 95.0. TFM are on 96.6. 35 years ago the two stations swapped frequencies. BBC Reception really do have their finger on the pulse ?
That might explain the confusion, the ones initially on that BBC page were different to either the Eston relay or Bilsdale's..... checked against MB21
Incidently I initially looked on
https://ukfree.tv/ to see what frequencies they used and what an awful mess of a site that's turned into.
That site has never been great

Although if their previously low powered relay has suddenly significantly gone up in power the incorrect polarisation might not be that much of an issue
I wonder if Arqiva are intending that to be a long term arrangement or whether they're getting a replacement temporary mast sent up?

I've used it in the past when I've been doing a rescan as it handily lists which services are on which MUX, also the ability to search by UHF channel number is handy when there's a troposperic 'lift'.
But it's always been full of extra un-necessary junk - the logos of channels in the MUX listing for example and listing which news programme a transmitter carries is useful, stating what breakfast TV stations it has carried isn't. It's probably one of the last sites to use scrolling marquee text :o

I wonder about Ravenscar, in that doing that will also bring Aislaby back, but could also provide a correct region feed to Whitby?

In the interest of scientific rigour I've just tried an experiment with my spectrum analyser, and an aerial.
Using the 'wrong' polarisation does still receive a signal, though depending upon the exact position of the aerial I can lose some muxes but not others, and also the muxes can end up with large chunks missing within them (remember they are an 8 MHz wide channel made up of a few thousand separate carriers.
As I said elsewhere,
'throw enough shite at a wall, and some of it should stick'

Maybe. A pragmatic solution for the right region might be to simply replace BBC 1 London with BBC 1 NE on the 27.5W transponder ?

I'll try and take a look on Sunday if I remember
Bedroom TV hasn't had any dropouts since it came back online (normally walking around upstairs causes such a thing). Though it is one of those All-In-One portable aerials.

In this instance having a portable aerial is A Good Thing !
How far are you from Eston Nab ? The relay (pre the fire etc) was 10 watts, so the existing transmitters there won't be capable of a huge amount more, so it's probably running at possibly 20 to 25 watts. That isn't going to go very far. (Bilsdale was 100,000 watts)

True. Although the operators of PSB2 might like their service back too
