Realistically, even if it's "structurally safe", will they still need to remove every bit of kit from the mast and inspect it on the ground, if not dismantle and reassemble the mast itself piece by piece? (I realise the cabling will all be fire retardant, but the photos don't look great…)

Yes! Traced to a short circuit in a transformer in LBC's transmitter. I know the IBA engineer who was sent there to find out why Capital and LBC had suddenly died!

If it's declared safe they, (and all the site sharers) will just get on with sorting out their own bits and pieces. They won't dismantle the mast wholesale. Cleaning out the inside of the mast will be a Victorian style hell job I can imagine
I'm no expert in this, but why are they distributing the channels to the transmitter relays from an emergency backup service from Intelsat rather than Astra 2?

Because (oversimplified) the channels on Intelsat are already packaged as DTT transport style streams, and DTT SI data, so are relatively easy to 'cut and paste' into the on site codecs at the tx sites.

Using the domestic streams on Astra would be far more complex

Ah I see, I knew there was a good reason, I thought they could accept any video source easily, thanks for the explanation.
The down side is only BBC 1 London region (and the three BBC 1 nations) are available from Intelsat. Still quite a bit of work to get a relay such as Whitby rigged. Impressive
Would be interesting to see how the satellite backup works in practice - aren't there PSB channels that aren't backed up, is there anything at all on the commercial muxes (even a message/placeholder), how would a receiver behave with that situation, etc.

Is this its first proper outing?

I guess actual relays would not have the satellite facility in place, which is fair enough, but would that also be true for "relays" like Plympton which IIRC are fibre fed, or would the backup be to fall back to being an actual relay from a main site
Is Whitby only receiving the PSB1 SD mux currently?

I thought BBC locals were distributed to tx sites via satellite now? Only thing I can think of is that they're gone to the ISDN back up for one of York's transmitters and the rest are on RBS?
It will be interesting to see how the local BBC regional news service handles this, and whether we see any crossover in terms of stories from the other region which is considered the backup.
Eston Nab is back on, no mention of relaying the wrong region. They have also got a Radio Tees FM service up and running from there
