Great news. Think this is a great appointment - but would still like to see Christian Fraser joining the team too.

Not sure why the dedicated thread for this was closed? As it seems like a significant development, I certainly would have missed the news had it not been for that thread

A return by Michael Fish to the BBC on Newsnight tonight.

I note that in the press pack for the upcoming second series of The Capture, there’s a reference specifically to one of the actors playing a Newsnight presenter. What’s more, there’s a photo in the press pack showing the actor in the old set of Studio B!



I wonder when those bits were filmed - presumably some time ago and perhaps meaning that the last bit of ‘Newsnight’ filming in Studio B was for a TV drama rather than Newsnight itself…

It's interesting how near-universal the shift towards using actual news studios (and often, though not in this case, actual newsreaders) has been in the last decade or so. You hardly ever get those cheap-looking 'DIY' news sets anymore, which were more common 15-20 years ago. Certainly for the better. I suppose the increasing complexity and cost of news sets themselves has meant that what can feasibly be thrown together on a drama budget just doesn't cut it any more.

I have to say, this 'presenter' looks very much like Nisha Pilai of the BBC World alumni.

I suppose it's easier to use a real presenter for a short fake news item that can be edited in later, Lucrezia Millarani was the newsreader in the last series of Unforgotten for example but for something like an interview scene, it's better to use an actor or actress.

I do hope Newsnight remain in 54D. It suits them. They just need to sort out the issue with the sofa, perhaps by coming to an agreement with BBC Persia about having a neutral colour that works for both without having the need for 'stretchy-covers'.

BBC Persian (note - with an N at the end) is a channel which has lots of different programmes and also uses covers to change the seat colours. There are a total of 3 sets of covers which gives 4 colour choices (including the actual colour of the seats).

And they all look terrible! It’s 2022. Surely there’s a better solution than incredibly creased sofa covers!!?

Those scenes were the last to be recorded on the old studio B set in September last year. One or two other things were recorded in Studio B during Covid times, but always with brought in lighting and isolated cameras.

Not sure why but I don’t think 54D is the right studio for Newsnight, it feels dark (which is fair enough) but cramped, I am guessing I am saying that because it used to be in B and a big studio in TVC so yeah not sure.
