Art Attack returns

I happened to do a Google search for Art Attack today, and found out that Disney are bringing it back for the Latin American market - or, rather, they’re bringing back the name Art Attack:

"You don't need to be an expert to be a great artist." Disney+ announced the start of production of "Art Attack: Challenge Mode," which brings back the iconic series that encouraged us all to be artists. This new Latin American original series from Disney+ Original Productions produced by Non Stop will pit five artists and influencers against each other in fun artistic challenges that they must overcome with ingenuity and creativity.

Combining elements of reality and game show, the new series features, in its Spanish edition for Latin America, the participation of Mexican youtuber and gamer Antrax, Argentine tik toker Franco Ceres, Mexican youtuber specialized in arts and crafts Dani Hoyos, Mexican artist and youtuber Liz Rangel (Craftingeek), and Mexican makeup artist specialized in special effects Joo Skellington.

It sounds about as far removed from the original programme as you could get, and looks awful, IMO, though I daresay I’m not in the programme’s target audience . Just... why even bother calling it Art Attack, if it’s going to be nothing like the classic programme we all know and love?

I mean, I don’t know enough about Latin American children’s art programming to know this for sure but one would assume that the point is to capitalise on a familiar brand. After all they’ve used the logo. Fact is, you were interested in talking about it – you might even have given it a watch!

So this is Disney's second attempt at it, mainstream at least. They've had at least one bash or so before for Latin America, though it may have just been a redub of the UK version,. Their first stab, the Disney Junior version was made in Argentina, it says here.

I happened to come across this completely by accident, haha. I just think it’s a shame that they’re seemingly sullying the much-loved Art Attack brand with this tripe, which, let’s face it, has absolutely nothing to do with the original programme - except for the name.

It was the other way round - the revived series was made in Latin America, and presenters from other countries were flown to Buenos Aires to record on the set there.

As a matter of fact, I remember when the revival first came on over here, and I hated it - though I suspect a lot of that was to do with the absence of a certain Neil Buchanan…

I think to even call it a spin-off is a big stretch - it's absolutely nothing like Art Attack - Disney are just using the name, presumably because (as [mention]Joe[/mention] pointed out) it's a familiar name that resonates with viewers.

Sneer at me a bit more, why don't you?! I stand by what I said - okay, so it's not "nothing like Art Attack", but it's not exactly similar to the original format, is it? There's no white set, no Head, no Big Art Attacks (as far as I can tell) - all they seem to have kept is the name and the 'makes'. In that respect I'd say it's quite a radical departure from the familiar format. Anyway I've said my piece now, and I'll leave it at that.
