English Soaps and Continuing Dramas to Crossover

For the first time in British television history, the country’s soaps and continuing dramas have joined forces to highlight the issue of climate change and environmental issues.

Casualty, Coronation Street, Doctors, EastEnders, Emmerdale, Holby City and Hollyoaks have each filmed scenes, or have references, to cover different aspects of climate change and, in a soap first, five of the soaps will also be referencing each other as each drama will also give a nod to another. Viewers will see some of Britain’s best loved characters pop up in another soap as they discuss, or see the moments, that have been debated in another show in a bid to raise awareness of climate change.

The landmark event will see a Hollyoaks character pop up in Walford while villagers of the Chester soap will learn about events at Holby City. A social media video featuring two of Emmerdale’s residents will be shown to Coronation Street characters, whilst one of BBC One’s Doctors will appear on the cobbles of Coronation Street. Casualty will also be discussed in The Woolpack, and a social media clip from Weatherfield will be chatted about in The Queen Vic, as the soaps all come together for a special week.

The drama begins on Monday 1 November, the same week as World Leaders meet to discuss the climate crisis at the COP26 conference.

Following many months of planning and meetings between the respective soaps and continuing drama editorial teams, the scriptwriters on each of the productions each took on the task to feature the other soaps storylines.

Emmerdale’s Executive Producer, Jane Hudson, originally conceived the idea for this unique initiative and has been co-ordinating with her fellow executives.

“Never before have all five soaps and both continuing dramas come together and united in telling one story. And we certainly haven't seen characters pop up in other shows before. This is a real treat for our audience, whilst also allowing us to get across a very important message.”

I know it's pedantic, but it's not really every British soap/continuing drama unless they have the likes of Rownd a Rownd and Pobol y Cwm involved. Every English language soap and continuing drama, maybe. It's a small gripe, not directed at you, but it's something that happens quite often when mainstream/English media report on 'British' TV.

I suspect this will feel incredibly forced rather than naturally woven into the show, especially as it is based around the subject the soaps don't really tackle and unlike other issues don't naturally come up in daily conversation in such a way that addresses the issue, but will be interesting to see how they try and do it.

Every English TV soap sounds more like it. They're all set in England, so "English" fits even if "English language" doesn't, and the TV part is needed to exclude The Archers, which of course is a radio show.

Despite what the initial press releases seemed to imply, nobody is actually crossing over into the other soaps in-person

Everything will be social media clips, photos and newspaper articles apparently

Someone in EastEnders will be seeing a social media clip of Tracy and Maria from Corrie tomorrow night and someone else is going to be reading an article about Cindy is doing in Hollyoaks (I think) on Thursday

Pretty sure soaps have done character crossovers before, all be it for Comic Relief/Red Nose Day/insert some other telethon, albeit not as part of the show's individual canons.

EastEnders and Coronation Street have crossed over for BBC Children in Need, with a one off called East Street.

Dot in EastEnders mentioned the Corrie anniversary a few years ago saying she wanted to get home as her favourite show is on soon.

Casualty and Holby have crossed over - Casualty@Holby City, and characters still do occasionally.

Away from the soaps, Bad Girls had some of the Footballers' Wives cast in at one point when she was sent to prison in the latter.
