Derry Girls to end after 3rd Season

Lisa McGee creator of the Derry Girls announced on her twitter the show is to end after the upcoming 3rd season, no real surprise as Nicola Coughlan especially seems to be getting a big profile and the principal cast are now approaching their late 20s-early 30s.

Covid moving the filming dates didn't help either, but I think S3 is a good way to end like Father Ted did.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that Lisa McGee can be persuaded to do a film version to finish it completely, but the job has been done of providing another classic Channel 4 sitcom.

Not too surprising. One of the best sitcoms of recent years but about three series is the usual maximum of any coming of age style comedy or drama.

It’s the correct decision and no doubt channel 4/E4 will repeat it for years to come. 3 series is about right and with the likes of Nicola Coughling been 34 it’s getting a bit difficult to see them as teenagers. Possibly could return in a few years time for a few one off specials.

Speaking of coming of age comedy’s ladhood has also been giving a third series so I wonder if that will also end at series 3.

Great that's been recommissioned - they did have exam results in that but wasn't sure if it was A-Level or GCSE. I'm assuming the former as I think the radio series then moved on to his Uni years.


I don't think C4 repeat as many of their recent comedy breakthrough series on the main channel as they should. I think Derry Girls has had repeat runs on E4 quite frequently and also possibly 4Music but I think it has only had one repeat run on C4, as a box set late one evening rather than in a regular slot. I said during lockdown that C4 should have used the opportunity to perhaps reach a wider audience with it's small but solid collection of fairly recent hits which don't get the wider recognition they possibly deserve. I think at the very least when they fairly randomly schedule a new comedy series on Wednesdays or Thursdays at 10pm they should fill the back half hour with a rerun of another series.

There's no point repeating comedies in the 10pm slot when they have All4.

It goes back decades with the classic BBC comedies but also worked more recently with the likes of The Inbetweeners, Gavin and Stacey and Mrs Browns Boys. There is a channel hopping audience after the news so I think that where they'd usually just air a repeated light factual show or the 4th showing of Gogglebox that week in a slot after a new comedy it is worth just giving a fairly recent comedy another outing - and that would possibly lift the new comedy slightly too. All4 then complements that - people might not stick around weekly watching it but it might encourage them to catch it on All4.

You thought that Friday Night Dinner repeats would get 2m during lockdown on the old place and it didn't so it's not true that repeating comedies will mean good ratings in tricky slots.
