Ellen to end in 2022

Quote:Daytime’s most recognizable face has decided her upcoming season, the show’s nineteenth, will be the last. The decision, which fell to DeGeneres, is said to have been several years in the making. She informed her staff May 11, and will sit down with longtime pal and daytime predecessor Oprah Winfrey to discuss the news on Ellen‘s May 13 show.

“When you’re a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged – and as great as this show is, and as fun as it is, it’s just not a challenge anymore,” DeGeneres tells The Hollywood Reporter, discussing the move publicly for the first time.

Timing her departure is something DeGeneres has openly wrestled with in the past. In a 2018 New York Times profile, she revealed that her actress wife, Portia de Rossi, had been encouraging her to move on from the 180-shows-a-year gig, while her comedian brother, along with executives at Warner Bros., had urged her to continue. In the end, DeGeneres signed on for three more seasons, but was clear with herself and her team that this contract — which would take her well beyond 3,000 shows, and a stunning 2,400 celebrity interviews — would be her last.

18 years is a great run although I think given the many unsavoury stories that have emerged in recent times, it wasn't a surprise it's ending next year.

Sounds like change is coming for American daytime TV. Judge Judy finishes anytime soon, Ellen next year... a lot of the other staples like Jerry Springer Show ended in the last few years, though I note Springer then went and did a Judge Judy knock-off, whether it'll last as Judy is up for debate. I think Springer's main daytime show ran for nearly three decades which may or may not be some sort of record outside of soap?

The Kelly Clarkson Show I imagine will slot into the Ellen timeslot since it's by all accounts doing quite well.

Might be difficult given how competitive the gameshow market in the US is but ITV Studios IMO should launch a syndicated version of The Chase or maybe BBC Studios should launch The Weakest Link since the reboot has done well for NBC.

For reference, Judge Judy finishes on 21 June 2021.

I bet Ellen wishes she hadn't signed for another 3 years now and ended after 16 years before the shows reputation was trashed.

It's funny really how these hit daytime talk shows almost always come from the syndication market. It isn't something the networks have managed to commission successfully within their own daytime hours ignoring the panel discussion formats of The View and The Talk.

There was talk of James Corden being eyed up to replace Ellen with a daytime show but I imagine the late late show market has more prestige and money, even if you're not on air till 12.37am.

Corden's contract doesn't end until 2023 so he's unlikely to replace Ellen and also there was rumours he was planning to move back to the UK in the next couple of years but not sure if they're true.

The end of the Ellen show will leave a hole in the (already very poor) daytime ITV2 schedule.

Maybe Rikki Lake will make another comeback?
"From today you'll hear some new voices when you're watching UTV, as for the time being we're handing over to our colleagues at ITV, but rest assured Julian and I will be back with you as soon as possible"

Ricki Lake is older than the average ITV2 viewer so very unlikely! They'll probably just buy another chatshow like Kelly Clarkson for example.

I'm surprised Ellen has lasted as long as it has on ITV2 - not because of the recent stories but more that I'm sure it had had a couple of runs in this country and had never come to much - maybe on 5 Star? Also the US Celeb talkshows - rather than Springer etc - never take huge hold generally over here. Must do decent-ish numbers for them as its been on a fair few years now I think

I think Ellen was on the precursor to 5Star, either Five Life or Fiver and a stint on Really IIRC.

That's as may be but she's 10 years younger than Ellen DeGeneres!

I was referring to the programme rather than Ricki herself.

Anyone know how it rates on ITV2? It is a bit of an odd addition to the daytime lineup, but they repeat it every morning at 7am too so must see some value. They’ve also been showing Game of Games during the day too.

Agree that Kelly Clarkson seems a good fit though, if they want to keep a show similar. Talking of ITV2 imports, I’m surprised they’ve never tried the US version of The Voice. Especially considering the high calibre of coaches & the fact they’ve become home of the US Masked Singer.

The Kelly Clarkson Show or The View would be good fits.
