Regional News Nostalgia

With the new of Bob Hall's death I was looking for some footage of the last Central News before it got Carltonised, which for my money still stands up as one of the best designed news bulletins in UK TV history.    Couldn't find a flagship bulletin on YouTube though, but found this from 1991 - a special edition with the opening of the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham.

What grabbed my attention here though was the weather at the end.  I remember the Legal & General sponsorship, but I don't remember the weather being presented in this manner - the weather presenter, Charlie Neil, sat in front of a TV.

You kind of get the idea in that video but the main thing I remember from that era of Central News is that those titles were LOUD. Strange to think that Central was one of the only ITV regions that had a half-hour bulletin that went up directly against the BBC regional news. Home & Away was must see television in our house so I certainly remember a lot more Central News than I do Midlands Today.

Also when Channel 5 News moved to six they promoted it with "See it first on Channel 5 at six (repeated on ITV at 6.30)".

I remember a piece in Broadcast circa 1995 saying that Central News was the most successful regional news programme in Britain in terms of audience share, despite going up against their rival show on the Beeb. I remember the least successful was Tyne Tees, which given what an otherwise heavy ITV-watching area that was illustrates how popular Mike Neville was on the Beeb, and why they poached him.
