What is the BEST ident you've ever seen?
#1
Had the idea for this thread after i have strangely enjoyed seeing what everyone's worst ident is in the thread for that.

So I figured why not do the opposite, what is the best ident/ident package you've ever seen?

For me, it would be far have to be BBC Two 1991-01/2015-18 package. And if I had to pick one of them, it would be....

And an Honourable Mention would go to:

At risk of sounding like a broken record but I loved all these but the all time favourite:

Also from the same package:

Honourable mention as there probably aren't many idents that ran for nearly 18 years:

I love this mirror effect. it’s very creative and genius. my favourites are this and the space invader one at Canary Wharf.

I’m not saying I’m not a fan of the September 2007 CGI idents but I wish these carried on until the 2013 rebrand

This is very creative while still retaining the Channel Four style weirdness.

I really am a fan of the BSB idents especially Galaxy! Such a shame they were only used briefly.

I just love this one from RTÉ. The transition of Dublin’s O’Connell St from pre-1966 with Nelson’s Pillar to the 21st century with The Spire is just wonderful.

I really like the BBC Scotland idents. The mixture of live recording and animated effects is stunning.

With Neil on the Calrton "Hearts" package. A real shame that wasn't *the* package for the network. For all their percieved faults, Carlton really understood branding.

Controversially, the previous package (also rolled out to Central, replacing the famous cake) was very clever, particularly the special idents for Corrie & Emmerdale amongst others. Like the way the 1999 package is tainted by replacing Central and Westcountry as brands, I think this package is unfairly tainted because it replaced the cake - but I'd also argue the cake was quite dated by the late 90's, and I think you'd struggle to adapt to the modern era unless you did a Channel 4 and monochromised it.

That said, SMG's package in that era was also excellent. A bit "Eurovision postcard" but executed really well.

The BBC1 laserdisk globe takes a lot of beating, but I do have a soft spot for this

The best of a bad bunch that in hindsight turned out not to be all that bad after all.

At the time, the original BBC News 24 package, the BBC1 balloons, and the original BBC2 era (specifically the fly trap ident).

I also loved the CNNI 95ish package, Sky 1995, and Sky Premier 1998 ident.

Always had a soft spot for the STV "Tiddlywinks" ident:

This absolutely stunning ident, but really a shout-out to that whole balloon era. Both the 1997 originals, which are obviously really gorgeous, but I also have a soft spot for the later additions, where they’ve been a bit more ambitious in placing the balloon using CGI - the Blackpool Tower, Needles and Angel of the North style idents, not to mention the themed idents.

Whilst the four ‘people’ idents are a bit weaker, I know, I still look back to this era of BBC One pres with a real fondness, and this Millennium Dome ident just caps it off for me. I was just the right age for the Dome to be really exciting (8 going on 9), and I totally missed out on all the cynicism and just thought it was really cool. Seeing the balloon over it is wonderful: it’s perfectly lit and shot, really displaying that excitement of the new millennium, I think.

And that soundtrack is superb! I have a hunch that this ident was commissioned around the same time as the four ‘people’ idents as the soundtracks are extremely similar in terms of their structure and musical motifs (whilst I know there are certain motifs that are similar throughout the entire set, these idents from 2000 are different enough from 1997 but very similar to each other to be noticeable).

Plus, we see here that the pictures ‘loop’ at the halfway mark and this is the same for the full versions of all the 2000 people idents, again suggesting a common production decision. I think I’m right in saying that at the equivalent point of a ‘long’ 1997-era ident, the picture cuts to a different angle at that point, but obviously that can’t be done when this ident is a single shot.

Anyway, this is just about top of the list for me, taking me back to my childhood and just summing up a brilliant era for BBC pres.

I was always fond of the BBC Video COW ident - I remember it being on an Edd the Duck VHS.

One of the first ident packages that got me into TV presentation was CITV in 1999. The rollercoaster ident is a personal favourite.

There's the obvious classics too.

I second this. It's a crying shame Carlton put itself in such bad reputation, these idents ARE pretty much ahead of their time.

(well, except the 1995 ones)
