April Fool's on Television

From Spaghetti Trees, to Flying Penguins, to April Fuels, Television has had its fair share of April Fool's gags, tricks, and fun. Let's discuss a few of them:

C4 put more effort into April Fools during the Big 4 era than they did into Christmas.

The This Morning one was hilarious although Holly clearly wasn't impressed!

I remember John Barrowman telling us on Live & Kicking that Alton Towers were going to build a Great White Shark ride where you had to wear a wetsuit and go under the lake.

I fell for that one.

They brought this up during the anniversary thing. Apparently they hadn't thought to do anything at all for April Fool's Day, so Dec came up with that bright idea while they were on air. He looked suitably embarrassed while recounting the story.

Not TV, but one of my favourites was Rob Brydon doing Ken Bruce's whole Radio 2 show as Ken Bruce. It had me going for a while.

One of the best ones I remember from when I was a kid was a demonstration of what we would later know as an MP3 player on Going Live in 1989. It was called Chippie and could hold hundreds of songs on a small card, it was even voice activated. Philip Schofield did an item on it, spoke to the inventor and later they did a demonstration of it by getting viewers to phone in and ask for a song from that week's Top 40. Philip then played that song from Chippie.

It was amazing at the time, I think I fell for it and it was never mentioned again..... but Philip Scofield invented the MP3 player

I didn't know there were any clips of it in the wild, but a bit was shown again on This Morning:

There was another April Fool trick played on Philip Schofield too. Throughout the show they were promoting Jonathan Morris from Bread as being the 'Hot Seat' guest at the end of the programme, but it wasn't, it was Philip's turn. The put captions up during the programme so there were people ready with questions,

Incidently, it was the same episode as the famous appearance by 5 Star and featured Michael Mcintyre as a child, both of which have rather overshadowered Chippie

I remember the music player item on Going Live, particularly that it was claimed to be a voice activated device. One of that week's chart records was Stop by Sam Brown, which somebody phoned in to request, suggesting that it might confuse the device with Stop being both a voice command and the name of the track.
Write that down in your copybook now

Yes that was a feature I'd forgotten, it wasn't just foreseeing the mp3 player, but voice assistants too

They repeated it on mid-week CBBC later, where any relevance to April fools day was lost so played out as real. Which made it even more surreal.

The best part of that was when Peter Serafinowicz phoned in as Terry Wogan and they got mixed up as to who was who!

The Big Breakfast had a live camera focussed on the Millennium Dome during it's construction which they'd throw to and generally mock the inactivity. On 1st April 1998 they cut to footage of the dome 'on fire', and got into a LOT of trouble.
