News Coverage Tory Leadership Race - News Coverage
I've never really rated Sophie personally although she'd been a surprisingly good fit on Sunday mornings by all accounts. Sometimes though with political content you need someone who makes it more accessible, and other times you need the harder line journalists who can stand up to them when required, and this is probably one of those occasions. This is where Emily Maitlis is such a huge loss to the BBC - suspect she may have been the choice had she sitll been with them.

Victoria Derbyshire or Jo Coburn would have been good at this.
Indeed Emily was pictured on the Sky EPG, so not sure if she hosted a debate last time around and it's been picked up from that. The imagery behind her seems to be similar to that on the set and in the titles tonight.

I found Sophie perfectly fine for what it was on prime time BBC One

I get the feeling Brekkie and others probably wanted to get a different outcome from the debate than what the organisers would have wanted which may effect their choice of host
Emily Maitlis hosted the debate in 2019, which was also called 'Our next Prime Minister' and used almost exactly the same title sequence. I seem to remember she was similarly criticised in some parts for her performance but was perfectly fine.
Hmmm. I thought the format was decent actually, as it saved it from being another edition of Question Time. There was just enough audience participation for my money – especially considering they were all blue voters (that isn’t a dig by the way – all I mean is that more from the audience would have made it feel, to me, a lot more like a party event). I liked the more informed and analytical questioning from Mason and Islam.

I think Sophie did okay, considering how dogged Sunak was in interrupting and talking over others.

My biggest issue, really, is that I was supposed to pack for a work trip tonight and sucked into another leaders’ debate - they’re lethal in that regard!
Harry Cole won't be presenting tonight's debate... he has Covid.
