The BBC's broadcast centre will be in Centenary Square, in front of the Symphony Hall, Rep Theatre and Library of Birmingham, and will incorporate the official merchandise "megastore". There has been a little bit of grumbling about it taking over open space in the city centre when there is empty land where the council's House of Sport was recently knocked down just over the road.

Having walked past this today and everything is green inside the studio apart from the windows, including the pillars between the windows. So other than the real view looks like everything will be chroma key using augmented reality cameras. Difficult to see much though, and it did look like a green sofa which would possibly make the keying more difficult.

I wonder if we might end up seeing something that looks like the virtual set they use for nearly everything other than football in Salford but with real windows.

So similar to what Sky did with their football set then, which even if they have a real view made it feel like they were in a studio disconnected from events anyhow.

I guess the issue with these games is the venues are spread out - there isn't a main cluster to focus on. Of course prior to covid the BBC had been using their main games studio less and less anyway so be interesting to see how much it is used. BBC3 will also need a position for the evenings too.

Any news on if they'll have an anchor at the swimming and cycling at least?

The listings suggest Clare Balding will be at Sandwell Aquatics Centre and Gabby Logan will be at Alexander Stadium meaning BBC Three can use the Centenary Square studio in the evenings.

The set will be interesting. It's located too closely to the Library to get a full view of it. And the rest of the view the set looks out on to us fairly unremarkable at best with the back end of the new Paradise Plaza complex.

If anything, a set on the garden on the viewpoint floor of the Library would have worked quite nicely with a view of the skyline of Birmingham. None of the landmarks will have been in the view, but I feel it would have made for a better view than in the ground of Centenary Square.

Two things that jumped out of me:
1) Not sure what the point of the 5am repeat of the highlight show. Something like a 7am repeat on BBC Two would surely be more of use to anyone who couldn't stay up for the original showing.

2) Unlike in 2012 or 2014, the coverage doesn't move over to BBC Two again at 10pm. Probably not much point if there's not much on (BBC Three is on air until 10:30) and allows the highlights to have a small rehearsal period in the studio. In 2014, the 10pm was often filled with Barry McGuigan joining Gary for extended highlights of the day's boxing so there wasn't much live coverage in that slot.

I'm so curious to see what the ratings will be like for the games. I'm still not feeling any buzz for the event with less than a week to go, certainly nothing like Glasgow. I don't know what changed but the conceit of a multisport event that involves an otherwise quite odd selection of countries (in sporting terms) with a some world class athletes but not all of them feels a lot more pointless than it did four years ago to me.

Presumably people in Brum are a bit more excited?!

S4C will show daily half-hour highlights, produced by BBC Wales. Can't remember S4C showing any Commonwealth Games action before.

In terms of viewing figures it I think it will benefit from the fact that it’s live sport, which seems to have been hit less in terms of falling viewing figures than other programming. And it’ll be all over BBC One/Three so whilst be won’t be unavoidable it will very much front and centre once it starts.

To be honest, whilst people were a lot more people were aware of it, in the build up in the population at large there was a lot of apathy towards the London Olympics, that all changes once it begins.

I think one of the issues with the games from the UK point of view, unlike the Olympics there isn’t one unified Team GB for the national media to get unashamedly behind, so it’s a more difficult sell from that point of view. Obviously not an issue in Australia.
