Ludoregrets v Shamrock Rovers in Champions League qualifying on RTE, and the Bulgarian host broadcaster is using a fairly large if traditionally positioned scorebar, kind of in the shape of the Chevrolet logo but coloured black and red. Oh and a shadow effect behind it to boot.

I mentioned the other day about serif fonts needing to be banned, no 2 on that list is all italics which might have worked for 1990s BBC Sport but is out of place in 2022.

As expected, S4C is to show all of Wales/Cymru's soccer world cup games live and in Welsh.

Presumably getting their own skinned official FIFA graphics?

Nice virtual set for the World Athletics - appears to be floating on a lake.

BBC Sport have certainly got quite good at these VR sets and are managing to get some great views from Salford! (though they could do with some higher res backdrop images,  which seems to be a persistent issue)

Still not keen on the current style of BBC Sport desks, though.

A bit surprised the athletics is using the football set (presumably going off the desk and real floor) rather than the secondary set (used for the Winter Olympics etc.) but it looks quite nice.


Looks like Andrew Cotter joins the team from today. Was surprised that Steve Cram was the only lead commentator for the first four days; can't remember many, if any, occassions that there's only been one lead commentator on athletics coverage in the UK, even if the Diamond League for example has two lead comms without a co-comm so they both effectiely act as a co-comm too. I do wonder if it would have been better if the BBC brought in a second lead comm for for the whole event rathe rthan have Andrew for only half of the evnt, like they did at the 2018 Commonwealth Games for example with Katherine Merry travelling to Australia instead of Andrew Cotter. Anyways, Andrew Cotter is always a brilliant listen and well done for him for being on his thrid sport in 12 days!

Few other points from the athletics, it's great to see there was a swift u-turn to ditch the #bbcathletics in the bottom right corner after the first session on Friday. Like the new DOG on the Women's Euros it stayed on during the action and inevitably clashed with the timing clock when that first appeared a few hours into the coverage...

Also, a bit unfotunate that during the men's 100m final that Steve Cram's commentary was missing for 80% of the race due to technical difficulties. We heard him at the start and near the end but the majority of the race it cut out. Guess that may be rerecorded for the archive. 

Been some technical glitches on the world feed graphics and pictures too. The picture errors mainly have just been occasional breakup and poor quality of image especially during the marathons (so not that surprising and not much of an issue). The biggest issue with the graphics has been the live results that appear on the right-hand side of the screen in the immediate aftermath of a finish; these have often been quite wrong, one example from Sunday I think it had a British racer finishing second only for it to be updated to them finishing sixth. Can't remember of these being as wrong and often wrong when used in the Diamond League or elsewhere.

The first few days have been the most hectic of the schedule anyway with two sessions per day and the two Marathons. For the next few days there is only one session a day.

How come Friday's quarter final is on BBC Two when the other three games are on BBC One?

Tonight and tomorrows were scheduled for BBC1 as one of them was likely to feature England (saves the Schedule A/B scenario).   Fridays and Saturdays are just scheduling choices and fitting around other things like the athletics.

That makes sense. I know they've moved the Ten back but I assume they're going to stick with BBC One for extra time and pens?

Slight freeze there... did somebody forget to book the circuit with extra time in mind and they had to go to the reserve?

Yeah I thought it might be that. Thankfully they waited until the match was off air before putting the regions into circuit (causing a downgrade to SD.)
